Well Bob and I went out again Badger'en! It started out warm this morning at 5am, the temp said it was 61 degrees! I met Bob at 5:50am, loaded my stuff in his pickup, and way we went to the closest McDonalds for a Sausage McMuffin and a Coffee, to start the day off right! (breakfast of Champions!!!).
Then off to the desert we went! As the sun rose, it become warmer, by the time we arrived to our starting point in the desert it was already near 70 degrees. As we took a two track trail across the desert, Bob and I noticed that there were no squirrels out moving around, he and I thought that it was warm enough for them to be out moving already at that time of the morning, as it not being as warm as the day was going to be. The Weather forecast said it was going to reach 98 degrees for the high today!
As we drove along, we both was thinking that it looked like the desert had died, there was no movement at all, as far as you could see! Then all of a sudden, there was a whistlepig scurrying across the road. Signs of life! Yea! Maybe this will not be a bust after all! We drove on! then another squirrel running through the tall grass, just seeing flicks of the movement, as they run from hole to hole!
At one spot that looked badgery, we stopped to glass the big field, and to do our business , as I looked through my bino's, I spot movement, way out there, sure enough it was a badger! I told Bob, and pointed him out! Bob got on him, as I readied my Ruger M77 Tang Safety 6mm Remington, this was it's maiden voyage since I had bought the rifle over 2 years ago. I had been working on a load for it, and I finally found a load that it agreed with! 75 gr Hornady HP, with IMR 4064, running out there at about 3500fps. This is going to be my new coyote calling rifle, one shot! one kill! No worry about them running away!
Well, I got on the badger, which kept running across the field from hole to hole, then stopped for a moment, and I let one fly, Bob called out, "You shot over him!" Again the badger was on the move! Again he stopped, standing, staring at me this time, all I could see fully was his head and shoulders, so I put the cross hairs on his head and let it rip again! At the shot, I heard the report from the field, a loud Whop!! Bob says "Did you hit him, I lost him!" I said, yes he is laying right there on the mound! Bob says, "Here!" and hands me his rangefinder and says to range it! I did, the bush that he was laying by was 241 yards by the rangefinder! So we went out to the spot, and he was laying right where he fell! So Bob and I high fived, and took some pictures and Bob went and got his scales from the truck, we weighed the critter at 10lbs 13oz. Not a huge badger, but a badger none the less! Bob and I took pictures for our photo albums and journals! He is a picture of him when we walked up to the badger! Bob als was keeping track of the stats for the day! Will show down below!
I picked up the badger to see how the bullet performed! I had hit the badger in the lower jaw, the lower jaw was completely gone! Apparently, I had hit it square in the kisser, and then the bullet continued down the neck into the body, with no exit!
Of we go! Back at finding more badgers! We didn't go far when we came across some jackrabbits, so Bob and I started popping rabbits, I shot a couple with my 6mm, Bob was shooting his 700 Remington SPS 204 Ruger, shooting a 40 gr bullet. That 204 just blows those rabbits up! All the while we were still looking badgers! Still no squirrels moving around! One now and then we would see! I had loaded some other ammo for the 6mm to try, so I figured they would be good to try on the rabbits! the bullets are 72 gr Barnes Varmin-a-tors HP loaded on top of IMR4064, but a grain hotter than the 75gr bullet! somewhere in the upper 3600 fps range! I shot a jack at about 40 yrs and it blew the rabbit right in half, the front shoulder was completely gone! Bob said, that there were pieces flying everywhere! Man, I am so excited with the 6mm! I almost couldn't sleep last night!
Now it is Bob's turn! We shot a few more Jackrabbits, and we came to a small rise in the road, as we topped the rise, I look to Bob's side of the road, and there out about 50 yards I see movement, I yell to Bob, "Right there Bob! A Badger!" Bob stops the truck, gets his rifle ready, the whole time the badger just standing there staring at us! Not moving, facing right at us! Bob had been wanting to see how the 204 would perform on a badger. Bob, lined up the badger, and fired, the badger just about flipped over backward from the bullet impact, then fell dead to the ground. Bob had shot the badger right in the middle of the chest, right were the neck and shoulders meet! Perfect dead center shot! OK! Now Bob and I are 1 each for the morning! BOB and I once again "High Fived!" took pictures of the badger and got a weight (Bob's Badger was a little bigger than mine) of 12# 15oz! It was a great day!
Good Job Bob!!
We ended the day in Grandview at the Y Cafe & Bar, had a good Lunch with a good friend, life is good when you can share a good meal with a friend after sharing a day like today with him! A hamburger lunch, good conversation, (and a pretty waitress to serve our lunch) Iced Tea to quench the thirst from the long hot dusty trail!
Here is a tally for the day:
Thanks Bob, Had a great time! Always do! Great Memories Made!
