I picked up an Olympic Arms 243wssm awhile back and thought I would do some remodeling on it. I will post pictures as I finish it up and if you have suggestions on what to add please post them. Loren

I've grown to really like my AR and have been doing mods as things become necessary. Next on mine is a full upper White Oak Arms 24" for .223/5.56 stainless with 1:12 twist. A couple things I added were the front bipod mount and an extended charging handle because the scope was in the way of the old one. One more thing I really like that I added is what I think was Tact Links ambidextrous bolt release and catch. Will not own another AR without it. www.tacticallink.com/Battery_Assist_Lever.html My charging handle is similar to this: shopwilsoncombat.com/Extended-Charging-Handle-Latch/productinfo/TR-CHR/ but I don't remember the brand.

Sorry, but if I had the extra money I'd rather put it into a nice custom bolt action or maybe a Cooper? Then, not only would you have a really nice gun but something good looking. Just my feelings and opinions. I have nothing against anyone that wants to own and shoot an AR. I believe if that's what they want then they should have that right. Just not my thing, personally.

I thought the same thing, till I got one. I really thought I would never get one, didn't really see a need but the price was too good to pass up and found out they can be pretty accurate with the right barrel and setup. Great fun for shooting prairie dogs.

Yeah, I know but, there's nothing prettier in the gun world than a nice piece of walnut and a good deep blue job. Most of the prarie dogs I've shot have been with a Ruger #1, .218 Bee. Ruger #1's are a good looking gun too and really make a nice custom gun. Guess that's why they make so many different gun types, different strokes for different folks.

Don't get me wrong, I love my bolt guns and have shot way more with them than the AR, but the AR is another cat with a different stripe and should not be discounted. I'm hoping with the next barrel for it that I'll be around 1/2 MOA if all goes as planned.

I know thbey're good guns. They've really made some advancements with them in the last few years and some of them are super accurate. If they just weren't so butt ugly! Just not my "cup o' tea". I have nothing against anybody that wants to own one and hunt/shoot with it. If that's what they like, more power to them.

Something that grows on ya, kind of like moss. Seriously, I use to be in the same camp with you. Had my hands on one with an Eotech red dot and with both eyes open really gave a different look at shooting standing.

I doubt if I'll ever convert, I'm pretty "old school". Some people try to claim that AR's are weapon's of war, well that claim just don' wash with me. Almost every type of gun we shoot today has been used in war, even single shots. And wether people want to admit it or not, one of the reasons for the old Winchester lever actions was for killing people! So if you like 'em, shoot 'em, no matter the type.

Good evening gents, I'm new to this board and just recently relocated back to Idaho. I think ARs in several calibers and configurations are great hunting rifles. But I really have not met a weapon I haven't liked!!! Just have to know their strengths and weaknesses and hunt with them appropriately! Thanks for a great website.

My AR is now my most accurate weapon, also the heaviest at 11.4lbs empty with the magazine out of it.

Hey 72camaro how do you like that collapsable stock? Doese it balance OK? What kind of groups are you getting out of that white oak upper?

Collapsible stock is like any standard AR stock that is a bit more wobbly than I like but it does not seem to effect the shooting.
I cannot say enough good things about White Oak Arms barrels, they are spot on. Without fine tuning my loads I've shot 40 through 55 grain and have at least 5 loads at 1/2" at 100yds and 3 of those are actually 3/8" at 100yds. Factory cheap ammo was about twice as accurate through this barrel as through my standard DPMS 16", that I only seemed to have one load that is supper accurate, and that's why I bought the White Oak Arms as I really like accuracy. This is for shooting prairie dogs and Rockchucks in April in Idaho and Montana.
My only complaint, and it is very, very, very slight, is that the upper has the tiniest of slop to the lower that my factory DMPS upper does not have. I shot a handful of rounds and didn't even notice till the other day when I just happen to have it out messing with it.

I've pretty much done away with all my collapsible stocks. My wife still prefers them on her tactical rifles so I guess I've found a use for them. Plus, I shoot suppressed so the fixed stock seems to balance better. Could never get over the wobble. I've been eye-balling the white oak barrels for a while now but just trying figure out what I'd use it for.

On another board one of the guys has one and has the same results but a bit shorter barrel, excellent accuracy out of the gate. Just pick the barrel that fits your needs that you want to be a bit more accurate with. That's why I got the 24" and 1:12 twist, for long range, light to medium grain bullet shooting from a bipod for prairie dogs and if I can fit it in, coyotes. I'd never want to carry it all day on a sling as it's got to be close to 12lbs when loaded.
I'll also have to say the DPMS runs like a sewing machine. When I got it, it was a bit rough on the action but working and oiling it, smooth as a baby's bottom and I've run powder that is know to sometimes not cycle in AR effectively and have never had one hang and not cycle fully except one I think I somehow did not resize. It was either H4198 or IMR4198 that supposed to sometimes not have enough to cycle but works great for me. Previously only H322 and a 40 grain hollow point would be accurate in my 16" DPMS barrel, now most everything I've tried so far is good to great in White Oak.
The other things I do like about my gun is the Timney trigger, helped some, and I do really like the Nikon M-223 BDC scope, which works as advertised.
