I had to carry one for 30+ years, courtesy of Uncle Sugar. I hated the damned things, but shot them very well, even using one competitively shooting for the Idaho ARNG high power rifle team. I did NOT own one of my own until it looked like Obama was going to get elected, and built one as an M4 clone, out of protest, mostly, and made sure that all of my friends that voted for that SOB saw me with it often.
Well, in the meantime, I've built six more of the things, moved four of them for cash, still have the M4, the other complete rifle at the moment is a stainless 20" "heavy", 1-8 twist 5.56/Wylde. I built that upper as a "side cocker", using pieces from Fulton Armory. I REALLY like having the operating handle on the right side of the receiver, right where it's supposed to be. I can use it without getting out of position, something that is impossible to do with the regular charging handle. I put that upper onto a Tactical Innovations (out of Bonner's Ferry, ID) T15 BDX lower and Rock River LPK. Mounted a 4-12 Redfield "Revenge Hunter" Accu Range. OK, so the scope is one that a feller in Blackfoot sold to me for like $50 at a gas station as I was headed home to Arco. Haven't shot that scope yet, but it's gotta be better choice on that rifle than the red dot/laser that I HAD mounted on there..... (oh, and BTW, I LOVE that Tactical Innovations lower!!!!!)
Both rifles use Rock River LPK's with their two stage NM triggers, pieces that in my opinion are the best trigger for the bucks you can get, IF you are working on a budget. Last one I bought was roughly half the cost of a Geiselle, but, they're also not adjustable. You get a good, clean, fairly light break that is consistent, and "back then", I was picking them up for around a C note in the LPK.
I've got one more going together at the moment, on a Palmetto State Armory lower with A2 butt. I've also started to assemble a heavy "slick side" upper, and may even modify it to a side cocker, as well. Haven't settled on cartridge yet, but I've been itching for a .458 SOCOM for probably ten years. The 25-45 Sharps is really interesting, especially to someone like me that's used several .257 Roberts for several decades to dispatch Mulies and Whitetails. We'll see, and, there's also the possibility of building several uppers in different flavors to use on that lower!
