Hey guys! New member here.
I've always wanted to shoot whistle pigs since I picked up my first gun at 14 (26 now). This year I'm doing it! I currently have a mossberg 500 persuader for home defense primarily. My question is, does anyone here use a shot gun for whistle pigs? I would imagine upland game load would work. Maybe waterfowl load? I want to try to hit one with a slug for fun.
I'm also going to get a ruger 10/22 for some serious 'piggin. Just planning on a 4x scope and a few bx-25 mags for now but want to eventually get a good stock, upgrade internals and get a threaded barrel for a suppressor (legally registered of course).
Thanks in advance for some insight!
also, we went target shooting out at sand hollow last week and saw a few whistle pigs out. I'm sure by now they are back in with the snow, but this season looks like it might be good.

Hello slowsuby,
Welcome to the IVH Forums. We are glad to have you find us. You have found a great bunch of guys and gals here at IVH. There is a bunch of years of experience here in the IVH members, on the forums and in the club.
If a shotgun is all you have, then is ok to use. It may become a little expensive after a while though, with the price of ammo now that is. Unless you are a reloader! I do know a few people and kids that use a shotgun to shoot whistlepigs, and do well with it.
I would think if you can find 22 ammo for a good price, that would be your best bet. Going out and shooting 500 or more rounds a day can get a little spendy also. The 10/22 is a good choice for a piggn' gun. I would suggest that instead of a 4X scope, I would go with a 3x9 or 4x12, to start out with. That way you don't have to worry about changing out the scope in a short time, because you will want more magnification really soon. So, just start out right!
A few whistlepigs will be out on these warm sunny days, but we don't shoot them at this time of year, it is there breeding time, and some of the female are already preggo, and will be having the babies soon, we try not to bother them until April/May, when the babies are out of the dens running around.
We have a club meeting coming up on February 11th at 7pm at the Great Wall Chinese Restaurant on Eagle Road. Come on down and check us out!

I will respectfully disagree with Stickman for three reasons: 1)availability of .22 is an issue 2) cost of .22 is an issue (unless you don't mind to spend 60.00 for a 20.00 brick) and 3) .17HMR
Aside from that, .17HMR is an absolute must for piggin!! There is no comparison between the .17 and .22. When the .17 hits em', they perform acrobatics. You and your buddies can score each shot/move. Backflip? 5 points! Triple flip? 9 points! Fly in the air 30 feet? (I have seriously had this happen on a few occasions, they just go flying really high up...it is super funny) 10 points!
Sure, .17 is not cheap, but you catch Cabela's sale on it (within the next two months) and it'll be 8.99 for 50rds. After shooting them with the .17, I can't even fathom using the .22 anymore. That much of a difference.

I agree with Gary. I think the .22 long rifle hollow point is thge best all around for whistle pigs. I have seen quite a few aerobatics with it, and they're just as dead. .22 ammo is kind of scarce right now but it will come back eventually. Keep watching and asking at all the stores. I happened on some at Bi-Mart, Rem. hollow points, 525 round carton for $18.00. Wal-Mart sells them for normal price when they get them. .17 HmR is going to cost you around $12 to $14 a box unless you get them on sale for $10, that's a box of fifty. Nothing wrong with the HMR if that's what you decide on though and the ones I've seen and shot are really accurate. I also think the 10/22 is the best all around .22 rifle. Watch Bi-Mart again, they have them on sale quite often. I've often thought of shooting them with a shotgun. You always see a lot of runners. it would fun to shoot them on the run. I think a 28 ga. or .410 would be good for that. I like to take my centerfires out and shoot them once in awhile too, they really make a spectacular show. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying Falex is wrong, everybody has their own opinions, ideas and experiences. Whatever you choose to shoot them with will work just fine. The main thing is, have fun. And there isn't many things much more fun than shooting whistle pigs. You might also want to think about entering our whistle pig contest in April.

I'm for .17hmr too. My son-in-laws use .22 and get just as many and shoot the closer ones but the longer reach ones they spot them and I shock them with the V-Max.

Thanks guys! I'm set on a .22 as generally ammo is available. Just gotta ride out this crazy spike in demand. Anyone know where to get some for a decent price? I wouldn't mind paying $30 for a brick as that still seems reasonable. Is bimart like Costco? Do you need a membership to shop there?
I just went to sportsmans in meridian and the guy behind the counter said the .22 ammo was sold out an hour after they got it in. Guess I'll just have to show up next Thursday and snag some. I know the gun show is coming up next week too. Are prices on ammo going to be nuts there? I might consider showing up early to that too if I can get my hands on a few bricks of .22. I hate being that guy but it might be time to stock up on it when I can get it. Having a few thousand rounds of it laying around wouldn't be bad so I would be able to ride out these ridiculous spikes in demand.

Keep an eye out online as well. Cabelas.com has been getting a pretty steady supply of .22 rounds, but you have to be quick on the trigger when you see it become available. I recommend you set-up your Cabelas account (if you haven't already), then buy the larger boxes of ammo when it becomes available. Since they only allow #1 box per day online, you should stick with the higher count boxes and have them shipped free to a Cabelas near you.
I picked up a couple of 325 round boxes in the last week, so it's getting a little bit better.

Nice. I'll look into it. Bimart is out and their Friday delivery is delayed by weather. But that sounds like a good place to get it. It's out of the way for most hoarders and I don't mind going to Emmett to get it. I'll set up an account with cabelas and try to snag some there.

We, my son-in-laws, have found CCI to be some of the more consistent accurate .22 ammo. They usually go for Stinger or Velocitors.

Read that the Cci blazers got good reviews and Cci is generally regarded as the better bulk ammo. I'm excited to see how it works. I still want to purchase more bricks as the wife is now getting interested in shooting and wants a hand gun. I'm thinking a .22 would be perfect.

I've shot a few whistle pigs with my .22 Buckmark and up to 25yds. Had some fouling and trigger problems after a lot of use and it was mainly from over oiling and the powder collecting on things. Not too terribly hard to break down all the way and you don't have to do it very often and it is very accurate. Mine is an older one called the Practical, base gun with upgraded front sight and grips. My wife's favorite gun to shoot.

Bi-Mart is a membership store but only costs $5.00. There's only three stores, Ontario, Weiser and Emmett. I do most of my buying at the Ontario store because there's no sales tax. I'm a cheapie! lol. There's a gun show in Caldwell today and tomorrow. .22 ammo wasn't to cheap there. I saw Rem. hollow points, 525 round bulk packs for $60.00, the same ones I got at Bi-Mart for $18.00.

Figures! I can't wait for the ammo shortage to end so we can boycott these douchebags who mark up ammo. I may just skip the gun show next weekend. I can't imagine finding a ruger 10/22 for cheaper that 215.

I would not discount the Remington 597. My son-in-law got one, did a quick floating the barrel with sandpaper and a socket, has a 4-12 scope on it and with CCI stingers is deadly accurate. One of the other son-in-laws has the 10/22 and he is pretty accurate too.
