Just called Ontario and they are out. I have 500 to pick up Wednesday so any stuff I'm buying now would be for stock or for future use. My wife thinks I'm crazy for buying ammo for a gun I don't own yet but I just want to know that I'll actually be able to shoot it once I do get it.

Nothing wrong with that.

Yeah, not a thing wrong with that. I had ammo and dies for .204 Ruger long before I had the gun. I'm pretty sure Bi-Mart will have the 10/22 rifles on sale before to long. For some reason they are always high at gun shows. Big 5 has them on sale now for $274.95! Way to high in my opinion. I have used the CCI ammo and it's good but my gun shoots the Rem. hollow points better and they mess up a whistle pretty good. I know some guys that prefer Win. Just shoot whatever you can find and see which shoots best in your gun. I've found that nearly every brand shoots to a differen point of impact so I try to stay with one brand.

At this point I can't be picky. I've heard the cci blazers shoot pretty dirty but I'm ok with that. I'm just trying to get my hands on what I can right now.

I'm also going to get a basic 10/22 that Sportsmans warehouse has for 230 right now. The only cheaper one is 215 at Templar exchange and they would probably have to order it.

Just got another 100 rounds from cabelas for 8 bucks. It comes out to 40 a brick but I figure I should see what my future gun likes.

I wouldn't evem consider these beep gun shows around here. Last one here at the Expo, guy had a 500rd brick of Federal for only 75.00. I looked at him, dead in his eye, and serious as I could, and said, "that is a great price for .22." Right next to it, he had 50rd boxes of 9mm for only 35.00. It was that good quality "Lawman" ammo.
Yes, yes...my facetiousness precedes me.
I do love .22's, also. However, I just prefer the HMR over it. Like the other gentleman stated, the HMR allows those longer shots where you don't need to "artillery shell" the hillsides like you do with the .22.
That being said, I am beep interested to give that newer .17WSM round a go. That oughtta' make the pigs whistle!!

It seems to be kinda mixed on if the .17WSM is a hit or not. Some like the idea but don't particularly like the gun.
Love my .17hmr and for a bit more I just moved up to the .223 for the ability to reload. If you want to stick to the .17 you may want to take a look at the .17 Hornet.

If I step up beyond a .22 in the future, it's probably going to be a .17 hmr. The ammo is still decently priced and it packs a punch. Also, bimart in weiser just got .22 in today. 525 bricks for 18.95 if anyone is interested.

I still think the .22 lr is the best all around for whistle pigs but, Bi-Mart has Savage bolt action .17 HMR's right now for $199.97. .22 ammo seems high now but .17 HMR will cost you $100 a brick when they're on sale. I just don't think a little more explosiveness and a few more yards is worth that much extra cost. That's just my opinion. When you get right down to it there is no bad choice for whistle pigs. Whatever peels your banana!

I've just always had better accuracy with the .17hmr and since I only get to shoot whistle pigs one time a year, sometimes two, for a few days and a bit more cost I'd like to think I get better accuracy.

72camero,
You make a good point here! If I was going to get to go shoot whistlepigs once or twice a year, I would think that I would opt for the 17hmr or 17wsm, or 17 hornet, 17 fireball, 223 Rem, anything else for that matter, because it is ONLY going to happen once or twice a year!!! Unlike the guys and gals that live here in SW Idaho, that have the opportunity to hunt every weekend, or like me and others, everyday!
If you think about the amount of ammo one can go through rather quickly in one shooting session (one day), every weekend 2 days a week, that is going to add up fast if you are shooting 17hmr. I don't know one guy that is going to go out and blow off a brick of 17hmr ammo at $100.00 a brick!
Nope, he is going to go blow off 100 rounds or so, and call it a day, ending his day in the field, or he is going to pull out the trusty ol' 22lr, where a guy with a brick of 22 rounds (500 or 525 rounds) at 18-20 dollars is going to go out and spend an entire day shooting, for way less money, and extend his shooing time out into a full day of fun. And will be able to do so, from weekend to weekend, because of the low cost of 22 ammo.
I know if I had a 17hmr, with the cost of 50 rounds compared to 500 rounds of 22LR, I am going to opt for the 22lr any ol' day.
Think of it these terms: 50 rounds of 17hmr $14.00 500 rounds of 22LR $19.00
ASK yourself: Which is going to fit your wallet better, and which is going to give you more fun and time in the field???
Later Gary

We can debate till we are blue in the face, but no one will change their mind. We all enjoy shooting and hunting and to each his own. For now, i'm sticking with a .22lr as its overall cheaper than any other weapon. My wife is barely going for a .22. I can't imagine having to pitch spending more for a .223/5.56 and then having to spend 150 bucks (at the cheapest) for a brick of .223/5.56. She wouldn't go for that! lol. With that said, i did just spend 3 hours driving from where I live in Meridian out to Weiser to pick up a brick of the Remington .22 "bobbleheads". After my two orders from Cabelas comes in, that puts me at 1,125 rounds of .22 for $51 bucks (not including the gas it took to get out to Weiser) lol. Getting my Ruger 10/22 tomorrow. Hope I can get the wife to approve a scope for it too. But who knows. I'm jacked for the Whistle Pigs to start coming out now! Only a month or so left!
