I've been involved in a number of discussions & cussins ;D
About whether coyotes have a memory or are able to reason. Most people believe they "can't or aren't able to" as that would take "human" ability/power?....Hmmm, LOL! Ok.
I figure they can & do, although in a primative manner. After all they have similar brain anatomy as us humans. Do a search & see for yourself.
I've watched coyotes & domestic dogs "figure out" a scenario. Some "experts" remark, canines "only remember" by positive vs negative stimuli.
Well, duh! so do I
eg; Swat a dog on the behind with a rolled up newspaper. I'll bet you later on through that dogs' life. If that dog was to see you roll up another newspaper. That dog will have good recall.
I spotted a coyote some yrs back laying off the roadway. Coyote watched me drive by. I shut my truck off after working up ahead of steam. To coast to a distant high cut ditch snow bank. I planned on hiding my truck behind it, from that coyotes view. So I could sneak in for a shot
I did so....I quietly got out of my truck & slinked up the drift for a shot. Well....that coyote was now sitting up & leaning towards the direction & staring hard. At the far end of the snow drift. After all, that coyote didn't see my truck pass on by & go down the road on the open area up ahead.
As soon as I peeked over that drift. That coyote already knew I was still there & had not left the area..Coyote then quickly bolted away.
Do they forget, can they be re-called? Of course they can & have.
Ever known a person who made the same mistake twice? LOL! I do, I'm guilty as charged ;D
Maybe I have a coyote brain? LOL!
