5-8-2013 Dave's First Whistlepigg'n Hunt.
A few days ago I found a post on the forums, with a member asking for someone to help with showing him the ropes of varmint hunting, and calling coyotes.
Well! knowing that this member has been with the club for a couple years, and I had talked to him previously about getting out, I wrote back to him (Dave S) on the forums. Telling him I would be glad to help him out. I told him that we meet each week on Wednesday for beans at Tom's Cabin Café, and then we go out to the sandhills and shoot whistlepigs and a badger if we run into one or two. I told him that we are not in the coyote calling time, at least until the pups are out of the dens, and on their own. But we will work on it until September/October.
Dave replied and said that he would be at Tom's Cabin on Wednesday. He also wrote and asked me what he needed to bring? He wrote, I know a gun and ammo, and ammo, and ammo, and a few other things. I wrote back telling him yes ammo, a chair, shooting sticks, a shooting bench (if you have one), and some water to stay hydrated. Dave, I am sorry I didn't think to say to bring your 22 rifle (my bad)!
Well, Wednesday arrived, Mark and I arrived at the Cabin, just a few minutes before Dave showed up. Cool! he did make it out today! Good!
Bob, I guess had not gotten home from his vacation, and Loren had called and told me that he was not going to make it to beans, he had something he had to do! but he told me that he may come out to the sandhills and join us for shooting. He didn't make it!
While we were having lunch we talked and asked questions of Dave, asking him if he had ever been varmint hunting? He replied: No Never! Oh Alright! A Newbe, we are going to pop his cherry today. Man did we!
I asked Dave what guns that he had brought, he told me that he had his AR15 223Rem. Oh Man! You didn't bring a 22 rifle, No he didn't! OK! we will deal with it. After good conversation, and great food, we all left and headed out to the sandhills. When we got there, Mark and I stopped and uncased our 22 rifles, and got ready for an onslaught on the piggies.
At first, Dave was having a hard time finding the piggies (this is normal for newbe's), he kept saying, "I don't see them!" excitedly! I then began pointing out the piggies for him, to help with his eye and mind to get coordinated, and for them to be burned into his mind, so that he can pick them out with just a glance, or scan across a grass field. After I showed him a few, he began to see what they looked like out in the grass, he was able to see & pick them out pretty well.
This is Dave's first whistlepig confirmed kill! CONGRATULATIONS DAVE! You are Officially a Varmint Hunter!
Here is Dave and Mark. Dave is Shooting My Custom Ruger 10/22. Mark shooting his Marlin Model 60 w/ATI Stock, 22lr!
The Mighty Varmint Hunters!
Overall, we had a good day. The whistlepigs were not out in force, but not bad. I think Dave is HOOKED on varmint hunting. He said that he would be back next Wednesday for Beans and Pigg'n. Before he left, we went to McDonalds for a cold drink, and talk more about hunting, shooting, and guns. Dave was saying that he was going home and seeing about the 22lr riflke he has, and putting a new scope on it.
Dave if you need anything, give me a call, I will see if I can help you out!
WELCOME to the Crew!
