When I was a kid & when we visited one of our Grandmas/[old Missouri woman] in Montour, Iowa. I seen her call her cats in the evening. She & my Aunt had many cats on their acrege. Grandpa just did what he was told LOL!
Grandma would use a "lip-squeek". 1st time I ever heard or seen that. Well, of all things. These cats would come running from the bushs, the standing corn & the neighbors yard. I thought, that was pretty cool. Anyway I forgot about that over the yrs.
When I started hunting coyotes & Red Fox on my own as a teenager. I used various long barreled smoothbore full choke 12ga shotguns. I would spot them, then sneak/stalk in closer for a shot or two.
One Winter snow covered day. I seen a Red curled up 3/8 mile off the gravel. Red was laying on some hills. I came in cross wind after figuring the best approach[from what I could see from the roadway]. As I got nearer & topped a high hill. I realized, there was a deep thin timbered draw/ravine between the fox & I.
No way could I get closer for a shot without the fox seeing or hearing me. I lay there prone on the hill top pondering, trying to figure out a better way. Well, it suddenly dawned on me... "Grandma's lip-squeek" Heck, I gave it a try.
The Red was roughly 300yrds cross wind from me. I gave a few loud squeeks aimed at him. The wind was light maybe 5-8mph.
Well, of all things that Red raised his head looking my way. I gave out one more squeek. Here he came, cool!
Unfortunately as soon as he got in the timbered draw, he cut down-wind & I never seen him again.
