I do a screen saver picture of family and friends every day and some times write a bit of a story. This was from my last visit to Mountain Home Idaho last week. Hunting can give you real solitude that you can't get doing other normal things.
You guys got it pretty good in Idaho where this is available fairly close. I live near/in woods but most land is private and you can't just grab a gun and go hunting, lots of restrictions. The wife said she is still not moving.
Had a great time at Amber and Andrew's place in Idaho last week. It is tough to beat having a nice place to stay, meals cooked and some of the day hunting and walking in full camouflage and just observing, even if I did not get to shoot anything. There was one bunny that got a free pass as he was about 15' away and thought I couldn't see him but he was pretty small and later I found out they have a season on cottontails so he was not legal tender at the moment anyhow. We still did a lot of shooting of the Whistle Pigs as a crew, about 300 with me and my son-in-laws. I had 107 for the week and could have been more but used the time trying to find my elusive badger that did not stay up long enough to shoot. He seen me first two times and went underground before I could line up a shot. The second day when I set up before he would get up straight away after about an hour and a half I looked sideways 90 degrees and there he was taking a look at me, and that was the last time I seen him as I was repositioning my gun to take him he dropped back over the hill.
I also drove up on a coyote and later all of us walked on a Jackrabbit that seen us first but we were about 25yds away from both but the coyote pranced away pretty fast but in the truck wasn't worried too much but the jackrabbit had a rocket on his back. That thing was fasttttt.
The Ravens were pretty cool too. In full cammo they knew something was different but about 5 of those big birds flew right over me close enough to hear the wind in their wings for a while as they continued to fly low about 20' over me to take a look and try to figure out what I was or if I was anything as I was staying completely still. Those guys are really good at having fun as they chased each other, did flying acrobatics and formation flying. I spotted a couple up in the scope a long ways off and they were enjoying the whistle pigs that were taking dirt naps. They ate well.
Matt had the all time high for a day at around 46 with his .22lr and Joe was close with his .22 magnum and that thing made the whistle pigs blow up into the air like on a trapeze. Mine, the .17hmr, flew them into the air once in a while but mainly made mince meat out of them. Not much left to skin. Andrew had to work most the time and only was able to come some evenings and Saturday and him and I were the back seat posse hanging out the windows and shooting, sometimes with the door open and our feet hanging outside resting the guns in the window opening. Probably looked pretty cool with a vehicle and 4 guns sticking out all aiming and shooting. Somewhat like a Gatling gun of SUV's.
I could do that a lot and get use to not working, just walking the plains and coming upon the animals was pretty cool. I also walked up on 3 antelope that didn't know I was there until I let them see me. Hunting all week was very satisfying, even if the badger didn't stay long enough to become a pelt, but it was a great feeling of solitude and seeing God's handy work.
