Both coyotes & Red Fox spend the vast majority of their time. ON the down-wind areas of hills & or cover. I refer these areas that offer a wind-brake, as "structure". Whether this structrue, is timber, hills, tall grass areas, whatever. These structure areas, offer them a wind-brake. It became obvious to me, in my early yrs. They prefer a wind-brake. Even when the wind is slight. They are typically on the down-wind. They also travel, hunt, play & mill around on the down-wind areas. Only times I've seen either on the up-wind. Was when they were traveling from point A- point B. As they moved from one down-wind area to the next. They spend very little time on the "up-wind". Here is a long range coyote. Bedded on the down-wind side of a drifted fenceline 1/2 mile away. Yeah, coyote was eyeing me, sitting on the roadway watching him. Both coyotes & Reds also prefer to bed on an area that offers them a view. Most often anyway. They also when bedded, will typically be on the "upper 1/2" of any hillside. Very rarely, on the lower 1/2 of the hill. Even when a coyote is bedded. They most often will still be watching. Or they'll raise their head & pan around. Their ears, are always in the "on" mode, regardless. They are VERY light sleepers, compared to the Red Fox. zoomed in more zoom You'll have to excuse my spelling. I got a C in English. Teacher felt sorry fur me, I reckon LOL!
