I am going to have to put my 17 on a bench next chance I get and shoot at 100 yards and see what it does. I will let you know!

Have the crown checked. Maybe recrowned or deburred.

Never thought of that Gary, good thinking.

Most of the time, if you are getting fliers it will be the crown has a burr or it has a nick or dent in the edge of the muzzle/riflings/crown. I would have a smith check if, and deburr it or recrown if needed. You won't notice a 1/4 or 1/2 inch off the barrel.
Thanks Bob!

I look forward to the 100yd group of 5 tests of covering the hole with a dime a few times. Once or twice, maybe, consistently, hmm. I would love to see it though with the 17 grain V-Max rounds. There has been talk that the 20 grain fmj are more likely to group better but I have not used that ammo, don't know if I've even seen it.

I'd also check the barrel channel in the stock. It doesn't seem like the .17 HMR would get the barrel that hot but maybe after 4 shots the barrel is warm enough that it touches the stock some where. Maybe, I say. You could glass the action to make sure it isn't moving and the barrel is free floating. The groups with my .204 improved a lot when I free floated it.

I'm still holding tight on seeing how everyone else does with any brand of the 17 grain V-max. I have a very free floated barrel so the barrel touching is not a problem. I do know if the barrel gets warm the shots do wander more, both my .17hmr and .243 with bull barrels and a cold barrel is best.

Well we got out to the range Sunday afternoon but it was too windy so I did not get to shoot groups like I wanted too. The dang 17 hmr's are too spendy and too scarce right now to waste. I had to check three stores to find any and when I did find them they were 14 bucks a box of 50.

Bi-Mart had them for 9.97 last month. The horders are starting to horde 17 hmr now I guess. Both sportsmans and Cabelas were completely out.

Still interested, anybody shooting better than the norm of 4 out of 5 covering a dime consistently. You can get a dime to touch, but to cover the holes consistently I will be greatly impressed.

Well I went to the range yesreday afternoon after it warmed up a bit and by the time I started shooting the wind was bad enought that it was blowing the little 17 all over the place. I still have not been able to shoot any groups.
Also I bought new bottom metal for the rifle from DIP. That metal plate on the bottom of the stock that surrounds the magazine well is about as sturdy as a tuna fish can! It just started to bend when I tried to thighten the stock screws. This new one is nice and thick and working well
