Hi all! I have not been on the IVH site in nearly a month due to a new baby. Thank you everyone for the kind comments. And yes, Bob, he is a future varmint hunter. Last weekend my father-in-law (Vince) was in town with his wife to see the new baby and because we had some time Saturday morning, eric was kind enough to volunteer the FJ for some yote hunting. I insisted the civic would suffice for all the Owyhee mountain climbing because it has never been stuck and the FJ has... Saw three yotes and Vince took a shot at one on the move at about 300 yards. We did about 6 stands and Eric didn't have a coffee spill on his lap. It was a pretty fun morning and I think Vince really enjoyed himself. I have been talking to Vince and my Brother-in-law (Kelby) for the last couple of months now about possibly doing an Idaho wolf hunt. Safe to say they are both on board. Not exactly sure when we'll plan it for, but sometime in or near the season when Rock Chucks are plentiful. My question to everyone is this: What areas in Idaho have you seen (or heard of) wolf activity? I figure since they have become such a nuisance and the state has considered hiring professional trappers in attempt to keep them at bay, you all would not have a problem divulging information as to their whereabouts. Any information on where to go would be very appreciated. Also, where is a good Rock Chuck area to go? And when is the peak season? I live in Marsing and somewhere relatively close would be great, but I have no problem traveling if need be. Just looking for a decent spot to take vince and Kelby when they come to visit from Colorado and Kansas. Thanks everyone! Scott

Wolf season will be closed during rockchuck season. It closes Mar. 31 and opens again in Aug. There a few 'chucks in the Owthees, Ive shot them there but you have to get out and hunt for them. Eric and I have seen a few good looking places this winter that need to be checked out this spring. Maybe in a few weeks when it gets a little warmer we can get together and do some 'chuck exploring. Please don't refer to Eric's rig as a "FJ" please refer to it as "Fake Jeep"! If your looking for a good rock chuck spot I am selling maps to Moose99's "secret" spots for $250.00 cash.
Kind regards, Ryan

Haha! You should have seen the ole' fake jeep in action... i admit there were a couple rough areas that I would have felt more comfortable in Gatsbys Honda but we made do with what we had :-) Not to many people are going to divulge their chuckin' grounds on the public forums wolf sightings possibly, but rock chuck hunting spots are sacred varmint hunter secrets I know the terrain they live in and Bob,s right, we'll go do some scouting this year and find them. I posted on Vinces varmint forum that we'd find some good wolf country for him when he comes back into town. My goal is to bag a wolf this year.

Sounds like a plan, Bob. I talked to a guy today who mentioned a few areas he goes for rock chucks, but if they don't turn out to be promising, I just may take you up on Moose99's "secret" spots for $250.00, Ryan. They can't be too secret if someone else such as yourself knows about them. I have heard from a few people now that they frequent certain parts of the owyhees, Bob. Should be fun scouting the area and maybe even see a yote or two in the process. Clarification Eric. Looking for rock chuck "areas" as in general locations: North of emmett, along the snake in cliffy/rocky areas, foothills etc etc. Not looking for or expecting specific locations with latitude and longitude. But I won't protest if someone wants to volunteer the information via a personal message. haha I have the wolf goal myself, but would first like to get a yote before spring hits. Doesn't give me long. My brother, Adam, will be here next week up from Utah for a coyote hunt.

Thanks Dogslayer! Normally I'd say everyone reading this forum owes you $250.00 for such secret information. But I don't think anyone will be hunting downtown Los Vegas. Haha. Just for fun I copied and pasted the numbers you provided in google search to see if anything came up and it took me to the strip in north Los vegas. A chinese restaurant actually. lol Not sure what Moose99 is up to in those parts, but I guess what happens in vegas stays in vegas.

mmmm tender wee pig. I also like to tenderize them a bit. Never enough to eat after the tenderizing is done though. DogsGone tells me that in Colorado the limit on rock chucks is 2 per day..and get this.. you have to eat them according to the rules! Yum yum. Strangely enough it seems that after they have been tenderized they dissapear and can not be located for harvest. Anyone ever eaten a rock chuck?

Eric, If you've ever had chinese, you've probably had rock chuck. (Especially in Vegas). Guess that makes about all of us. And here I thought I was eating cat the whole time. I'm going to sue for false advertisement. Call it what it is...sweet and sour rock chuck.

I know a guy here in Parma that would probably eat one. He ate a badger! But he's from Texas so that kinda explains things.

I read an article on shooting them and the guy said he eats them. Said they weren't bad. But who knows what he considers not bad...
