I know several members shoot the axis. What did you guys do about the trigger pull. I would like to get it softened to about 2.5 pounds or so. Did you guys/gals take it somewhere and what did you replace it with and who did your work. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for starting this thread, Cody. I have the same rifle and was looking to do the same thing. I love the rifle but sometimes as I am pulling the trigger in an intense situation I wonder for a split second it the safety is on. haha. 6-7 pounds is no light pull... I was thinking of doing around three pounds myself, but I think I might be sold on the adjustable replacement recommended by Moose99. Other than the trigger pull, how do you like the axis? We'll have to get out one of these weekends and do a hunt with Bob and Eric. I live right out there were you guys have been going. And if you guys are ever out there, feel free to stop in for a drink any time. Eric knows where I live.

Will do, Nick! And thanks! I'll drop you a message when I get it here in the next week or two. I'm sure I'll have some questions.

I like mine so far. What ammo do you shoot out of yours? I was just shooting the cheap pmc stuff 300 rounds for 115 bucks stuff I got at cabellas but it wont shoot a decent group at all. At 100 yards I could hit clays but where I hit the clay was a crap shoot lol. I think I am going to put the new trigger on it and a new scope and call it good. As far as upgrades go. I just need to get into reloading (stupid money issue) so I can get awesome rounds for it.

Ha! I just sent a PM to Cody saying "I bet Nick would help you install that timney trigger and give you some good ammo recommendations". +1 exalt to Moose99. If it wasn't for that timney trigger I might stand a chance at bringing in more coyotes than them Hylton brothers during one of the contests

Cody, I hear ya on the "stupid money issues." The ammo I purchased in large quantities is the American Eagle 223 Rem 50 grain Tipped Varmint. I read several articles and forums on best ammo for the price and saw this highly recommended. It's basically the Hornady 50 gr. V-max with a different colored polymer tip, but 6-8 bucks cheeper. I'd like to get into reloading myself, but I'm alright with this for now.

I just wish the 223 wasn't quite so hard to find right now I guess I am going to have to start making early morning cabelas runs lol. I have some nice 556 stuff I need to try also see if that is better than the pmc stuff.

Gatsby, The Axis trigger is workable, but it takes some fine tuning. I would agree that if a guy has an extra hundred bucks you should buy the Timney. Great products! I worked the trigger on a friends axis in .223 over. I removed the main spring and replaced it with a Wolfe spring. Then started fine tuning the spring with a set screw that fit right into the existing trigger, and by shortening the spring 1 coil at a time. the Trigger started out at 6.3#, and after some tinkering we got it down to a fraction under 3.5#'s. We hit the sear with a fine stone very very lightly just to remove a burr. If you are thinking about removing Savage's black grease, don't do it. I tried it and the trigger got worse. luckily a buddy had some that he uses on his AR. It is also available on JP's website. I did grease the 2 pins that hold everything together and seemed to help a little. Don't mess with anything until you get a trigger pull guage so you can see if your tweeks are changing anything. loaded up some 50 grain Dog Towns pushed by 26.4gr of Win 748 seated 15 thou off the lands and it shot 3/4 of an inch. I think it will do better but had a hard time with my rest, and the narrow forend. PS if you can do the trigger yourself, you can use the hundred bucks to buy a pound of powder at Cliffs!

Hey Ackley! Cody installed the Timney trigger on his Savage axis and its awesome. I had the opportunity to test both triggers; the Timney and the Savage Axis you worked over and they are both huge improvements over stock. One thing you fixed on Max's axis was the safety. The safety on Cody's Axis needs to be adjusted. How did you do that? His is so tight it didn't seem to engage. You only get a pound of powder at Cliffs for $100 during 1/2 price Tuesday. The other option is ZIdaho where you can buy all sorts of cheap items at 500% markup. Larry's had some variety of Powder last week. I checked for unique and varget but they didn't have those. They did have some popular IMR and Hodgdon varieties. CFE223 and 1lb of Win748 was on the shelves. They also have an impressive selection of bullets. AND the Best part is they aren't jacking their prices. Larry's is awesome

Cody, on the factory savage trigger there is a set screw that engages the bottom of the safety. My guess is the factory had that screw over engaged. I have no idea how timney addressed that issue but I bet there is some adjustment somewhere. What ever you do be careful and thoroughly test it on an empty chamber to make sure you don't have a slam fire ( bolt closing) or have the safety too loose. That stiff safety is a pain in the neck but it should always stay in position. Hopes this helps some.
Eric, couldn't agree with you more about Larry's sporting goods. A local owner that isn't gouging people when times are tough. We need to support those guys.

I like Larry's real well also, I've done some business with them in the past and will continue to do so. Also I'd like to say that Bi-Mart is good with their customers too. They said they don't know when they will get ammo in, they just have to take what they can get an when they can get it but, when they do get it they sell it for the normal price before the shortage. They don't jack up the price. We need more companies like these.
