Some yrs back. I took my Brother calling. We walked out on a 1/4 mile long hillside of picked corn. The hill bottomed out in a timbered creek valley below.
There was a large CRP field to our 5:00. I had Bro set about 20' away, to my cross & up-wind. Told him to alert me if he seen anything coming by useing a lip-squeek. I also told him to point his rifle towards the coyote. So if I didn't seen it intially. I could look at the direction of his barrel, without any talking.
I commenced to squall on my Tally-Ho. Maybe 5 minutes later, I hear Bro whisper "coyote". Well, my right ear was nearest him & I'm partially deaf in that ear. He again, abit louder whispered "coyote"
I heard him that time & slowly panned to my far right. I seen a lone coyote neandering over the adjacent large hill coming our way. I gave a few quick light squalls. Coyote then stopped, stared our way, then turned & walked maybe 20' or so parrallel to us. Then bed down in a small dip near the hill top.
Bro whisphered, "what now?" I said, "We'll were going to him & kill him". Got a smile from him on that note At the time, I had my Bushmaster 20" V-Match. No brag, but I was quite comfortable with that rifle.
Anyway, I walked out front of Bro, as I was the better rifle shot. He was toting his AR as well. We got to within 300yrds or so. Then the coyote, suddenly sat up & seen us. As he quickly started to turn & run. I put one in his midship. Down he went, he quickly got up & ran over the nearby hill top.
I told Bro, we are going to do a "pincer movement" on him. I had Bro swing way North & hook around to the South. I swung way South & would hook to the North. Putting the coyote between us. As I knew gut shot coyotes tend to lay back down & not go far. After a quick burst of running.
Well, we took to our plan, knowing neither of us would shoot. UNLESS, we both could see where the other was. Ok, follow plan A.
This took us about 15-20 minutes or so to walk. As we finally were able to see each other. We knew the coyote was some where in between us, down in a "dip" on the hills. As we drew nearer, the coyote flew up out of a dip & ran broadside between us & heading away from us. He got his second wind no doubt.
Bro commenced to un-load & missed. I shot 3x, hit him on the fly as he was stretched out flat. Coyote's front legs buckled underneath & he did a belly flot & slid a long ways going down-hill. Game over ;D
