I thought maybe we needed a thread dedicated to the ACTUALL laws and rules surrounding Varming hunting. Ive picked up on some really good information here in the past from various forum and club members. Ive also discovered some questionable information which needs some friendly debate. Listed below is some data ive gleaned from this very site ;D Some Fact, Some fiction.. Please verify before you act on it.
*Night hunting for varmints is OK as long as you obtain a permit from the Game and Fish and notify the local authorities where your hunting at.
*Shooting from a vehicle is allowed as long as your shooting at a non-controlled species (aka varmint) from a non maintained roadway.
*Shooting crows with a center fire rifle is not allowed.
*Bobcats have a season. (something I discovered late last year)
*Jack-a-lope, snipe and sasquatch are classified as Varmints. Shoot them at-will.
*Coyotes can sometimes miraculously split into two halves allowing a pair of novice varmint hunters to claim a 50/50 split.
(Again..Please confirm this information for yourself through the fish and game)
Do you have any additional lists of random varmint hunting regulations? Discuss..

Hey Eric, I've heard the same things. I've read the regs about crows and it's not real clear but the way I interpret it, it's illegal to use a rifle for them. And I think you're right about the snipe, jack a lope and sasquatch but, you may be required to use a silver bullet. The half coyotes, I've heard rumors about them, I'd sure like to find where they roam. I think it would be kinda fun to shoot 1/2 coyote. A guy told me once that he did a half ass job of skinning a coyote once, maybe that's what he was talking about! Hmm.

From here I've been told:
that Badgers smell especially terrible during the month of June. (Who is the checker on this?)
Hunt coyotes all months but April when they are weaning their pups so you have more to shoot later and the winter months are preferred for the furs.
The younger other half of the 50/50 split types in caps evidently so the older half of the 50/50 can read it without his glasses?

Badgers are great in June because the all the adolescents are being kicked out of the dens... I can't wait:). Bob, I can take you to where a 3 legged illusive coyote is, Kenny can claim 2.5 and who ever drops him can claim the other 7.5!

Eric and I can attest to badgers stinking during their breeding season. It's the worst thing I've ever smelled.

There's a BIG difference when they're breeding, be lieve me. You'll know it when you smell it and start gagging.

I bet I washed my hands 10 - 15 times before I got that musky badger odor off my hands. For the rest of day, every time I looked through my binoculars Id about gag because my thumbs would be right under my nose. A month later and that overpowering odor wasnt present any more and they smelled as bout as good as Bob does after a two day yote tournament

On that particular day I couldnt stand the smell of both of us I had shot a whistle pig that ended up exploding into the FJ landing on me and my rifle shoulder strap. We finished the day having shot and Posed with something like 6 of them stinkin' badgers. I clearly remember the smell of the interior of my rig the next day.. horrible I bet it smelled as bad as you and Tim when you guys brought in those 9 rubbermaid slow-roasted fermenting coyotes. heh heh

Hey! coincidentally I took the kids to an Idaho Fish and Game 'Winter Wildlife" discussion given by Idaho Fish and Game officer Bill London. Nick, I didnt get a chance to ask him about the correct amount of time to "bake" a coyote in rubbermaid in the back of a jeep before serving but I did get to talk to him a bit after the presentation. I told him I was with the Idaho Varmint Hunters group and that we'd welcome him to one of our meetings to sit and socialize with the members of the club. I thought this would allow us to ask questions and in turn familiarize the F&G with the great people that make up the IVH club. What do you guys think?
