Today I managed to make it out for my 4th try at taking a yote, and no cigar. I'm a bit frustrated but I know when everything aligns and I finally smoke one, it will be that much more satisfying!
So how many of you nailed one on your first try out? and did you have someone teaching you the trade?

I was extremely lucky. my second outing netted my first yote'. I think my average is to see a coyote around every 10th stand. I bought two hand calls and headed out to try them where no one but hopefully the coyotes would hear me "practicing". After a few rounds on my own I started going out with a few mentors to learn some better tactics. A great place to pick up on some strategy is at the competitions. Dont go out and enter the Worlds Coyote tournament right away but do join us for some of the 1 and 2 day hunts. There are some seasoned vets that frequent these tourny's and occasionally you'll pick up on some good advice that could provide meaning to a prior success or failure. Ive only been doing this for about 7 months but man is it addictive I try to get out shooting or hunting every weekend. Good Luck!

HI I STARTED HUNTING COYOTES WHEN I WAS 15 AND I AM NOW 50.ALOT HAS CHANGED SCENCE THEN THERE IS THIS THANG CALLED AN E-CALL THAT HAS MADE TODAYS COYOTE HUNTING SO TUFF ONLY BECUSE THERE IS SO MANY PEOPLE GOING OUT AND MAKING TODAYS COYOTE REAL SMART..THERE IS ALOT MORE TO IT THEN JUST GOING OUT AND PUTING A E-CALL IN A SADGE BRUSH AND TURNING IT ON.THERE IS WIND SUN LOCATION LOCATION AND LOCATION. YOU CAN NOT GO OUT AND CALL A COYOTE IF THERE IS NONE IN THE AREA..MAKE SURE THERE IS COYOTES IN THE AREA BEFORE YOU CALL..I DID CALL A COYOTE ON MY FIRST TRY.30 YEARS AGO.AND I STILL DO IT EVERY CHANCE I GET EVEN ON THE DAYS I DONT CALL ANY IN I TRY TO FIGURE OUT WHAT I DID WRONG..BUT I NEVER GIVE UP..SO KEEP TRYING GET WITH SOMEONE THAT CAN HELP YOU..IT IS NOT A EASY SPORT THAT IS WHAT MAKES IT FUN...

And don't get so serious about it, it's no big deal if you go out and don't shoot a coyote. The main thing is to have fun, enjoy being outdoors. Relax and enjoy yourself and it will happen when you're not even expecting it. And it wouldn't be quite so tricky if we could just get Nick to say where he hunts!

Stick with it. The best way to learn is to get out there and make mistakes. Just started hunting yotes myself and there are a million things we can and will do wrong. I'm still laughing about this past sunday when we missed one at 75 yards (yep, 75 yards)... all rookie mistakes. If we got one on every trip, it would be called Idaho Varmint Killers... not Idaho Varmint Hunters.

I have gone out once and got a reply but didn't see one. I admit I am a "unlearned" coyote hunter.

"If we got one on every trip, it would be called Idaho Varmint Killers... not Idaho Varmint Hunters."
Well said wthomas01! Thank You for pointing that out!
Please allow me to point out, with the number of coyote hunters in SW Idaho, if each person that goes out calling or hunting, shot 1 coyote each,on every trip, there would be no coyotes left for us to hunt. The old adage of: "Leave a few for seed" Would be completely meaningless, as there would no coyotes to breed, to replenish the local population.

It is hard not to be serious about hunting coyotes when it is a passion!

I'm no expert by a long ways but I have called in a few or been there when they were called in. On one hunt a friend and I called in a triple, that was pretty exciting. We only got one of them though. On another hunt one hung up at 600 yds. and I managed to coax it into about 300 yds. I don't know how many times I went out before I got one to come in but it was a lot. It seems like we can get them to howl and bark at us but can't get them in, that happens a lot. I know that experience makes a big difference and some guys are better at it but I also think a big part of it is just plain ol' luck. But I have tons of fun whether I get one or not and I'll keep trying. One day maybe guys will be trying to figure out where I go! (Nick) .Have fun. Bob

Nick, I seem to be doing a good job of that, since I have had no time to go and try to educate anything lately! LOL!
