Red Fox den, entrance hole. Note, the hole is taller than it is wide. Indicative of a canine dig. Red Fox den entrance holes. Tend to be 10-12" tall x 8-9" wide give or take.
Another thing about den holes. Is most all burrowing animals. Red Fox, coyote, badger, skunk & ground hog. All of the above animals will often do. What I refer to as a "clean-out". Come Springtime, or when the female may be pregnant.
Other times they'll most often do a clean-out. Is in late Fall, specifically the animals that tend to hibernate vs the canines. Canines which do not tend to do a clean-out late Fall.
Except Red Fox, which may do a clean out or may not. Clean-out meaning, they clear the tunnels & or den chamber from any cave-ins.
Another Red Fox den, entrance hole.
Unknown to some. Red Fox may use their den site on/off all through the yr. Not just during Springtime pup birthing/rearing time. Coyotes on the other hand. Rarely use their den hole during the Winter months. Except for in extreme circumstances.
Coyote den entrance hole. This entrance hole was roughly 14-15" high x 10-12" wide. This also the only canine den I have ever known of. That did not have atleast 1-exit. Quite rare.
A few things that may change the opening of a den hole. ie; make a den hole wider than it is tall is. If/when they dig under a large tree root, large boulder, log, building, ect. Then either canine will widen the hole. So they can still get in & out.
Red Fox den entrance hole. They would use this den site, mainly during harsh Winter weather. Otherwise it was drifted shut most of the Winter.
