Wife and I decided to go Wolf hunting. Loaded a couple of rifles, calls, eats, and drinks and hit the road. We headed to a area where we have heard howling and seen scat many times. On the way there, saw a tree needing watered. Hopped out of the truck, and took care of the tree. Got back in and slammed the door. Thought I heard a howl. Told that to the wife, we rolled down our windows. Turns out we had wolf on both sides of us within a few hundred yards, and they were talking. Grabbed call and rifle and bailed. Got away from truck and road.
Got down and found a couple trees that we could sit against. Spent a few minutes figuring out what we had going on then went to call. Turns out I grabbed the "wrong" call. Had a Elk call when I had intended to grab the Rabbit. Didn't want to go back to the truck, so I used what I had and blew it like it was the rabbit call. Sounded like there was one a hundred yards or so behind us and a four to six of 'em a few hundred yards out front. Would call a little than wait awhile. They kept talking, but didn't seem to be moving. Looking around, I saw a line of trees that we could get behind and cut distance to the group in half. Finally decided that was what we should do. A week or two earlier we were in a similiar situation with a different group. There was three or four of them that time. We didn't move, and they didn't come to us. Finally they were quiet and that was that. 20/20 hind sight, I now wonder if they weren't headed our way. The one behind us quit making noise, while the others continued. Figured the single busted us. We assumed it was trying to get back with the others Decided to make the move and see if we couldn't lay eyes on 'em while they were still talking. We backed out and were headed to the line of trees.
Gotta mention I can't hear out of one ear and pretty much deaf with the other when I don't have my hearing aids in. I don't wear them when I hunt, due to the hopes of making some loud noise.
Unknown to me, Wife was trying to get my attention. She had left her rifle in the truck, and a Wolf was down there, five yards from where we were calling. It was gone by the time she got my attention. Guessing it was the one that was behind us, but no way to really know. Hunting them has been a learning experience. We see 'em where we can't shoot them, and not when we can. One of these days it will work out. Gotta get my dues paid so it will.
