I am really considering a couple new guns. They will be my first "big game guns" In other words I own a 10/22 and that is it for a rile. I am considering a .223 for varmint and a 30-06 for deer and elk. My friend is trying to get me to buy a 300 win mag with a muzzle brake. I dont know if that is a good idea or not. Anyone have any advice. I dont want to spend a ton of money especially on the 223 because I have never been hunting. Anyone have any advice or know a great start 223 that wont break the bank.

Amen on what Nick says. I have sevearal different varmint rifles. My personal favorite is .22/250 but nowdays you can't go wrong with the .223. You can get any brand or type rifle you want in that caliber. It's hugely popular and ammo can be found just about anywhere. And factory ammo is cheap, Bi-Mart regularly has Rem. ammo for $5.99 a box. It's an easy cartridge to reload too. my favorite for big game is the .270 but you can't go wrong with any of the .30/06 based cartridges or the ol' ought six itself. Just pick one and shoot it's lot's, get used to it so when you pull the trigger you'll know where it's going to hit. Good luck. Bob

I use a Remington Model Seven Predator 22-250, 22in fluted barrel 7.5 lbs with a Nikon 4.5 x 14 Coyote Scope all in Mossy Oak Brush. For big Mule Deer Bucks, Elk, and Moose I use a Browning Bar 338 Win Mag with the Boss Muzzle Brake System. Which tames the recoil and dials in what they call a sweet spot. It highly accurate so you can shoot better at long ranges out past 400 yards and still have the energy to knock the bull down. You get what you pay for! Mark II
