My father-in-law ended switching up the weekends he came from WA (the week before the tourney) so we didn't participate in it. We were successful though in our ventures. Since I live in Mt Home there is a great spot where you can walk for miles around in terrain that is open and was very active in early APR and MAY. We took down so many I don't think we really made a dent in the overall population of them because we went for three straight days and they kept coming out of the same spots - it was like clockwork and we must have gotten about 20 each every day!
My father-in-law came back again in June and we were not quite as successful the second go around in the same area. The problem was that by this time the grass had grown so tall that it was nearly impossible to see them through it. We could hear there distinctive calls but the grass provided great cover for them. We were able to get some but not nearly the numbers we did previously. He was able to get himself a badger so it wasn't a wasted trip but all in all in the early spring months is definitely the prime time.
I told my father-in-law that the next year he should take off a week and we can hit them hard in early APR when they are out in full force and the grass isn't as high as it was a month ago.

Yeah, the whistle pig shooting just wasn't as good this year and the grass and weeds do make a difference. In years past there's been days when I'd shoot almost a brick of ammo in one day. This year I didn't shoot a brick all season. They're down for the rest of the year now. I've been out shooting badgers a couple times lately and we never saw one whistle pig. Already looking forward to next spring. Bob

Is it still the same, not a lot of Whistle Pigs to shoot, or are they coming out mid September? I'm racing this next weekend but would think about making a trip down to Mountain Home, Idaho the 22nd or 29th if shooting is good again, like it was early in the season. My out of state license is over the end of September until next year.

I'm going racing this weekend. No more hunting till next month. Got to fix my alternator pulley so the belt will stay on, I have a deep 'v' but it is too big, but I'm going to run it anyways. The RPM's just have to be kept up to keep it charging. If not at the line I will have to keep it around 2000rpm to charge. I'll buy a smaller deep v later when I get time. Busy busy busy.
