Hello Everyone,
As I was waiting for the time to go and pickup my grand daughter to take to school (kindergarten) at 12:30pm, I decided that I while I was going to be out of the house, I would go and shoot whistlepigs for awhile, when I thought I would call Loren and see if he would like to traipse along with me, and shoot some rats. So I called and asked him, he said give me an hour.
I got my business, and club business done, and off to Loren's to pick him up. When I got there he asked if it was ok if we made a couple stops to drop of whistlepig fliers, I said yes, and off we go. We got all that done, off to the squirrel killing fields. When I got to Loren's house, I noticed that the wind was blowing, and not just a breeze either. I told Loren that I didn't know it was blowing when I had called. he said that ok! we are going anyway!!!!
We got our to the hills, found squirrels that were on the lee sides of the hills that were kinda protected from the wind, the sun was shining and the wind was just a little cool.
Loren and I would drive along a goat trail till we found a concentration of squirrels, then we would stop and shoot for awhile, or until the squirrels would go underground.
On one of the goat trails we were driving along, I saw a badger stick it's head out of a mound hole about 30 ft away, I got my 22lr rifle out to get a shot, took aim at the badgers head, and CLICK! a bad round, OH NO! rack the bolt, and the round stays in the chamber, it is a bendtz target chamber, it is tight, and a loaded round will not eject from it, so I said a prayer, dropped the magazine, recharged the hammer, by this time the badger had gone down the hole, so I sat and waited, Loren's sitting next to me, and he is whistling like a squirrel, he didn't know it was a badger, so I told him quietly, that it was a badger, about that time the badger sticks it head up out of the hole, I took aim right in the middle of its head and pulled the trigger, all I saw was the badger buck up and back and disappear - Loren got excited saying OH Yeah! You nailed him!
We went to the hole, and there was blood in the entrance, then we look down the hole just past the opening, and there it was laying. Loren, reached in and grabbed it, then said, "OH Man this thing must be huge, It is heavy!! Getting a good grip on it, he heaved it out of the hole, and it was a big ol' female, with long diggers.
That is the first badger of the 2010 season.
Right between the eyes.
