Hello newb,
Welcome to the IVH Forums. And welcome to the hunting world. There is alot of info here on the forums, and we are a good bunch of men and women, that love to hunt varmints, with lots of experience and knowledge, I am sure you will be able to glean some of that knowledge from them.
If you are a newb as you say, then I would suggest getting to know some of our members, become a friend, and get them to take you under their wing, so that you can learn from that person. If are able to do that, you will shorten your learning curve time considerably. Calling Coyotes is not an easy proposition in Idaho. And less of a proposition if you haven't hunted or know how to call predators.
Do you have any hunting equipment?

The only hunting equipment i have is my rifle and my shotgun. My friend has alot of equipment that he would lend me, but he is new to idaho and has never hunted anything here but deer so he isn't sure of where to go and what works for the predators here.

newb,
You are going to need a good sagebrush pattern camo outfit, including a head net, and camo gloves. Your gun is going to need some camo to break it up a bit.
You are going to need a set of shooting sticks or a bipod for your rifle. You will need a butt pad or a small chair to sit in, because sitting still for a long time is hard to do if you are not comfortable.
If you know how to blow a call and make a rabbit distress, then you are going to need some hand calls.
Then you are going to need an Experienced Coyote caller to go with. Like I said before: Calling Coyotes in Idaho is not easy to do!!!!!!!!
If you don't know how to set up a calling stand, you are going to get frustrated, and after making a couple of dozen dry stands, you will wind up quiting and selling or pawning all your calling equipment.
The FIRST thing I would suggest that you get an experienced caller to go with, so that you don't educate the coyotes any further, and save yourself alot of frustration, and gas, and hair pulling, and, and, and, and!!!!!!!!
What caliber rifle? And what Gauge Shotgun? What ammo do you have for them?
As far as going, just go out to the desert! There are coyotes in downtown Boise, at the edge of Boise, and in all the desert. Pick a spot and go call it. Look for sign, like scat and footprints in the dust of the roads, and trails.

i have a mosin nagant, that i am able to hold at the ready for hours, most people think it is too much for varmint, but with the steel rounds most people do way more damage with a .22, the mosin pretty much just suck the guts out the other side through a .30 cal hole on the other side of a pig. i have looked through the pictures on this site and what you guys do with your .22s and what i do with my mosin. it is deffinitly not overkill. i also have a 12 guage maverick shotgun with a 28' barel. the only animals i know to find are rockchuck, red fox, and pigs, i have not shot any yet but pigs i have only got two. I would love for someone experienced to take me out. i want to go for coyote first because of the challenge that people speak of in idaho.

Hey newb,
We will not hunt with full metal jacketed bullets, for 2 reasons, 1) They are dangerous, ricochets to easy, we prefer bullets that explode on contact, with flesh or ground or rock. 2) A FMJ will not anchor a coyote on the spot, zipps right through, and they run off, and are wounded and suffer, or die a slow death. Spire Point, or AMax, Ballistic Tip bullets would be a better choice for the Mosin and coyote or badger shooting, even squirrel shooting. Shotgun Ammo for shooting coyotes, I use Remington 3" #4 Buckshot. My hunting partner shoots a Dead Coyote Choke and Dead Coyote 3" T shot or #4 Buckshot.
When you say "pigs?" I am assuming you are meaning "whistlepigs"?
Calling coyotes in Idaho is a challenge for sure.
We will be having a meeting on May 8th at 7pm at the great Wall Chinese Restaurant, come down and check us out, and consider joining the club, getting to know all of us, and make some friends.
BTW: Calling coyotes are not as easy to call as the "Pro's" make it look on the videos. Also, Please remember that those videos take as long as 2 years or more to make.
I have been calling predators for 40 years, it just gets tougher each year. I remeber a time, when all you had to do was lip squeak, and they would come running in numbers.
Later! Gary
