I am new to the area and have a 12 year old that is wanting to do some whistle pig hunting and I have no idea on where to take him. Any ideas on places to start and explore would be great. We don't have a 4x4 or atv. We do have an SUV though. Thanks in advance for the help and info.

mcboys,
First! Welcome to the IVH Forums. We are glad to have you here. We hope to read and see a bunch of your hunting stories and pictures.
Second! Where are you located? There is litterally a half a trillion acres of BLM and State public land in Idaho. If I were you, I would purchase one of the DeLorme Idaho Atlas Books (Big Red Map Books). It shows BLM and private lands boundries.
Really the only thing you have to remember about whistlepig shooting? You can not shoot them North of the Payette River (Emmett to Payette), but south of the river is good. Idaho Fish and Game has the areas listed in the Upland Game and Furbearers Regulations Booklet (Page 45).
Most areas in the desert, you will not need a 4x4, a SUV will do fine, unless you plan to go 4 wheeling - just park on the edge of the road, and walk out away from your vehicle.
It looks like there is going to be a bumper crop of whistlepigs this year. Loren and I went out yesterday, and we already saw a new brood of babies out running around, so they have already have breed and born a generation already this year, probably the first litter of the year, they will probably have at least 3 more broods this spring and summer.
We hope to see you and your 12 year old at out meetings. Good Hunting! Gary

A good place to start is South of Boise - out past the ID State Prison (Pleasant Valley Road) - go out past the signs of the Birds of Pray Lands. AAAAAAALot of people go out there and shoot, there are a lot of squirrels in the desert out there.
A person doesn't have to go far to see whistlepigs. They are on the side of the Freeway at Gowen Rd. You just can't shoot them there.
There are other areas you can go to. There is the Sand Hollow Tract west of Caldwell, South of the Freeway.
These 2 places will give a head start - then you can explore and find new places on your own -discovery is so cool!!!!!!!
Welcome to Idaho! Gary BTW: I was going to ask, does your son have his Hunters Safety Class finished and has gotten his Idaho Hunting license? And yourself also? Not being nosey, just precautious!

Yes, he did it last fall and went with his Uncle over to Arco and got his first deer. We both carry our hunting/fishing licenses.
