So after having the first coyote of the year come to my call and mojo critter on the run in the first five minutes of my second set of the day, and having two more come to my 5th set in the first minute (so fast I was not ready for them and they both escaped unscathed). I thought I had developed a solid sequence to work with.
Start: Vole squeal (on volume 2 of 5) for 1 minute 2 minute silence Baby cottontail (on volume 3 of 5) for 1 minute
wait 10 minutes and repeat.
In the last 4 days I have set up 16 more times and had zero response. A couple times I have set up on the edge of timber and could see coyotes on private, posted fields and they would not come to my calls.
How do you guys start your calling? What sounds do you use? How often do you call the same areas? Do you have a different sequence if you are calling over pasture vs crops? Just looking for a couple of "Typical" type of calling sequences. Hoping to pick your brains and get a starting point I can reference when things seem to not be working.
It seems like I am doing something wrong, I just don't know what that something is.

Hello khavic, Congrats!!!! That is great on your first dog! It sounds like you have a great start, with a good grasp on your calling sequence. Coyote's are individually different as people. And each has different likes and wants - like people. Meaning? What works today is not neccessairly going to work tomorrow - SO stick with what is working as your base - then expand and change up the sounds and sequences - until you find what is working that day. As for # of stands being Zeroed - That is about average here in SW Idaho. You will not call coyotes on every stand. So you are not doing anything wrong - at least by what I read here. Just make sure of the wind and sun. We hunt BLM Land, sage and grass lands. A few small peices of private land, which are mostly grass lands. Good Hunting Gary
