I went to Blacks Creek Range on the 10th to sight in my Remington 22 and on my way out I saw two whistle pigs on the side of the road. It was a pretty warm day so I am assuming they might be out early since the winter this year was short. These two guys were pretty small, I'd say maybe about hamsterish size maybe a little bit bigger.
My father-in-law and myself are planning to enter in the Whistle Pig tourney in April, I hope to make a meeting or two sometime before then.

bluestang,
Whistlepigs will be out in the winter! Although, you will not see but a few, they will not be out in force, like they are during the spring and early summer. They do have to eat, and they like to sun themselves, to warm up a bit.
You will see them on days like you said! on the warmest bright sunny days usually!
By the time they begin to emerge from their hibernation, they are ready to begin to breed, then several weeks after the first emergence their litters begin to show outside the dens, as mice sized critters, usually by the end of March. May be a little earlier this year, due to the mild winter and no snow on the ground. But due to the mild winter, there will be a bumper crop of whistlepigs this year.
Some people will begin to shoot them early, some people will wait till after they have breed, and have whelped they litters, as to give them a chance to propagate, before the onslaught, so to speak! It is entirely up to the one behind the crosshairs.
We just ask that everyone, please be careful when out shooting. Make sure of your target. Always point your gun in a safe direction. Never point toward anything you don't intend to destroy. Always make sure your gun is on safe.
The predator calling world has recently lost a brother to an accidental discharge while on a calling stand.
We look forward to meeting you and your father-in-law in April. Our next club meeting will be on April 10th. A few days before the Whistlepig Tournament. Your are welcome to attend the meetings. All the public is invited to sit in.
Good Hunting. Gary
