I would like to share this with the group. I have seen several comparisons with coyotes and Wolves. I had these two on the work bench at the same time and thought it might be nice to post a few picks to show the difference. The small skull is a average size male coyote at about 35#'s. The larger skull is a female Wolf taken in Idaho last week. Not sure of the weight but the pic's that I have seen, showed an average size Wolf for Idaho taken in unit 10A. This Wolf skull will compare to the 200# to 250# Black Bears that I clean for European mounts. I'll post a few pic's as they are cleaned and show the actual size, bone structure and density. They make a great European trophy mount!

Here are a few more pic's of the cleaned skulls. Check out the size of the brain capacity on the Wolf compared to the Black Bear. The Wolf skull in on the left!!! The Wolf skull in on Top and this Black Bear was around 250 pounds. This is the same Coyote skull and the Wolf skull as in the beginning of this post. From left to right is the Coyote, Wolf and Bear.

WoW! Now that you have the meat off the skulls, it really tells a different story.
Eventhough the bear is a bigger unit - the wolf skull is much bigger & beefier. If you will notice the lower jaw, it is thicker in width as well as height, the rear teeth are bigger, as well the canines.
Also look at the muscle wells behind the eye sockets, where the jaw muscles come through, they are much bigger than the bears, meaning that the bite force is much larger than the bear.
If I had to make a bet before I saw this, on which one would have won a fight, I would have bet on the bear. But! Now, I will have to change that bet to the wolf.
Thanks Tony for the comparison! Gary
