Hello everyone. When I first arrived here (Apr) I saw alot of whistle pigs off of I-84 leaving Twin Falls I believe and when I heard that these are popular varmint shooting I have been wanting to go whenever I had the chance. I am looking for information on what I need so I can pluck some whistle pigs with my father in law. We both have .22 rifles and we need to know if we need a varmint license and general areas of where we can go. I live in Mountain Home and I am military and my father in law is an out of state resident (WA).
Thanks,
I will definitely be going to the next meeting if work permits.

There are 5 choices of Non-Resident Idaho Licenses:
1) Combination Hunting and Fishing Licenses - Yearly - $240.00 2) Hunting Licenses - Yearly - $154.75 3) Small Game Hunting Licenses - (not valid for the first 5 days of pheasant season. Valid for upland and migratory game birds, turkeys, cottontails, snowshoe hare, huntable furbearers, and unprotected and predatory animals) - Yearly - $97.75 4) Three Day Nonresident Small Game Hunting - (not valid for the first 5 days of pheasant season. Valid for upland and migratory game birds, turkeys, cottontails, snowshoe hare, huntable furbearers, and unprotected and predatory animals) - $35.50 5) Nongame Hunting Licenses - (valid January to August) - $35.50
Choose one of these five and you will be good to go. Hunt all you want.
As for where to go, Mt Home is in the center of a Zillion Acres of BLM Ground. Get one of those Red Idaho Atlas Books (DeLorme), and go out and find the squirrels. The squirrels are everywhere, where you find one squirrel, you will find a million of them. Just look for the mounds of dirts.
We will be looking for you at the meeting.

So there is no particular season for these things? Are they out year round?
Stickman thank you so much for the reply.

Andrew,
If you are talking about ground squirrels (whistlepigs or rockchucks) NO! they are not out all year. They are only out in the spring and early summer, until the temps get to hot. When it gets hot, they go underground and hibranate until spring. You may see whistlepigs out in the winter feeding, you may find them in areas that the sun is warming the ground, and shining on bright sunny days, just a few if you are lucky to see them.
So, I guess there is a season, but not a set season from F&G - they are a non-game animal like coyotes and skunks, you can shoot as many as you want.
