I took this bore yesterday at 11:30am after a spot and stock. My buddy Eric, spotted this bear at over 3/4 mile. We made a plan and moved in from the bottom of the canyon. As we climbed the side of a cows face and spotted him again. I ranged him a 1021 yards, way to far for this old guy. We moved to the top of a knife ridge (took about 45 minutes) that put me in at 250 yards.
As the bore moved up the canyon I put the first of three bullets just behind his right shoulder as he was stepping and opening up his vitals. I was a little back on the impact but had a good through and through shot. The bore stumbled and then took off toward the bottom of the draw. Another shot toward the running bore and it was a miss. Then at just over 300 he stepped onto a fallen tree and quartered away from me. I sent another 300 Nosler Accubond to him and took out his right front shoulder. Whack! He then rolled off of the tree got back on three legs and came back down the canyon toward us. As he broke the 150 yard area I ended his journey with a round between his shoulders and broke his back.
Eric found this old white elk shed about 20 feet from where the bore stopped, nice touch to the photo.
He's not the biggest bear that I have seen this year but he will be the last for this spring. Any luck at all and there will be a few more deer fawns and and elk calves surviving this spring. I love evening up the playing field between predators and prey. And it is one more skull and penile bone for my tanks of Dermestid Beetles.
