Well yesterday I headed out to check the water tanks. To see what was still working after all the cold temps. And as always I had my gear in my truck for those just in case time. Most of the water was doing fine. Some still frozen up. I thought the cows doing fine and water is ok. So let's do some calling. I headed over to another spot a few miles away. In this big valley you can see for miles. So i was going to set up a stand down the way. When I looked out the pickup window and saw a coyote walking in the brush. Grabbed my 22-250 and stuck it out the window. By now the coyote put a mesquite tree between us.He had seen me by now,but still wasn't to sure what was going on. I eased the truck up a bit and he it the tall grass as was gone. I guess he figure out what was going on.
I then went about a half a mile. And did a stand and had a hawk come in. So I let the foxpro keep running. But nothing yet. I then went to my howler and man four deer can busting out of the brush. But no coyote yet. So we pack it up and waited to night fall.
On the first stand of the night I had the foxpro playing a new tune. With in five mins. a coyote was coming up the road. As soon as I hit him with the light he stop in his tracks. Now I'm hunting by myself so I run the light, doing the calling and shoot if all goes well. Well you guessed it. It didn't as I was reaching for my rifle I hit my water can and he bugged out.
So on to the next stand we go. Set up play the new tune on the foxpro. Nothing yet so I turn it up and I mean loud. For about 30 secs. Just before I turned it off I heard this sound. The sound that once you heard it you will never will forget it. For it will mack the hair on the back of your neck stand up. I thought maybe I was hearing things. So with the foxpro back on. I heard it again so I turn the sound off. As I sat there I heard it one more time as I was running the light. It was a mt. lion. I heard it three time but never got to see it. But he was telling me I was in the wrong place. And that this was his hunting grounds. Then it was all quite never saw or heard from him anymore. I've had folks tell me that there is one running around in that part.
So no fur down but it sure was a good day and night hunting. I don't always have to get any fur down to have a good time. This just goes to show the new people to our sport and remind us that have been doing it for awhile that you don't alway get or see coyotes. But you can still have a good time. The only thing that would make this a better hunt would've been if one of my friends could have join in on the fun.
We just had a cold spell blow in. So you can bet when the wind dies down I will be back out looking for Mr. mt. lion. So till next time good hunting.
