Well, the story goes like this! About 2 weeks ago, a lady friend called me and asked if I could come to their place and shoot the coyotes that are coming down to the farm and causing a ruckus, howling, and barking, and so on.....
She told me that she knew the guy to call, and knew that I could kill them, get rid of, or scare them away! So, I told her "You Bet!" I would be glad to help her out. So, I told her I would there on such and such date. So I called Loren and asked him if he was interested in going with me, to do a little coyote control out on the farm. He was all for it, so I told him what I had planned, gave him a time I would pick him up, and off to sleep for the coming morning.
While laying in bed, trying to sleep, brain in overdrive thinking of the set up, if I have all my stuff I need, etc..... about 11:30PM I hear an all to familiar sound on the roof! CRAP! It is raining. I slide open the window, and sure enough, it was not only raining, but it was pouring down, a toad strangler, a gully washer - man I was instantly bummed. But I thought, well I will go to sleep and when I wake with the alarm, I will check if it was raining still.
Alarm goes off, I go to the window, it was still raining, albeit, not as hard, but it was still raining. So I grabbed the phone, called Loren and told him to "Stand Down Sailor!!!" He said OK, I hung up, and went back to bed. Seeing how it was still "Dark Thirty"
When I reemerged from hibernation, it was still raining, in fact it had rained for 3 days.
Fast forward to last Sunday evening, the phone rings, it's my lady friend calling again. She told me that the coyotes are back, and closer to the house this time, she said in fact, she was talking to her friend on the phone, and the lady on the phone asked if her dogs were barking and howling, because she was able to hear it through the phone, they were so close to the house.
She asked if I could come out again to give it another try. I explained to her that we had gotten washed out on our former plans, but would be glad to come out again on Tuesday morning to give it whirl. So again, I called Loren, asked if he wanted to go with me, of course he said Yes! We talked and decided on a time, I would pick him up and we would go.
Monday night, I again, prepare to hunt in the morning. Get into bed, trying to sleep, again I hear the rain on the roof, but this time it was hail. I opened the window and looked out, OK! here we go again! I went to bed and got to sleep, when the alarm went off, got up, opened the window looked out, and what did I see, NOTHING!! It was SOOOOOOO Foggy, I couldn't see the house across the street about 60 yards away. I thought, I am going to go hunting anyway, because the place we are going to be hunting is up out of the valley, against the foothills, surely the fog will just be in the valley, and not up higher.
WRONG!!! I went and picked up Loren, foggy at his house also. Drove down through town, not as foggy, OK, this looks good, then across the river, up the hill and out onto the bench, and up to the foothills, but! the farther out of town we got, the thicker it was, I was driving 30 miles and hour, in the dark and fog, unable to see but a few feet in front of the truck.
We arrived at the farm, I pulled off the lane at the end of their driveway, and parked. My friends house was about 60 yards from us, and we couldn't see the outline of the house. There was a car in the yard about 35-40 yards we could barley see.
The neighbor's house was about 150 yards down the lane, they had the lights in the house on, and a TV on, we could barely make out the lights. So, Loren and I sat there for about an hour waiting for it to get lighter, and watched to see if the fog would lift, not a chance, it just got heavier, as we sat there, we shoot the BS, and then decided that this was a waste of time, we left went to the local donut house, and had coffee and donuts, killing time till it was time to go to Middleton to a meeting at 10:30AM.
As we drove to Middleton, the fog lifted and it was sunny and nice. On the return to the Emmett valley, we dropped down over the hill into the valley, it was socked in unable to see a few feet again.
Well, It just goes to show that despite the Well Laid Plans of Mice and Men, Mother Nature just has her own mind.
I haven't given up yet, our day will come for the inevitable meeting with the marauding pack of coyotes, and when that day comes, the Red God's will have a possums grin on their faces, and we will prevail in our task in helping my friend.
