This year has been a tough hunting year. In May the Whistle Pigs in Mountain Home, they just were not there in numbers. We did hit some ground squirrels fairly hard in Montana but nothing like previous years in Idaho.
Deer and Elk, not much. We had some cowboys come up and take over one of the spots that midcamp uses for hunting and has been fairly productive over the years but they built a pole tent 30' from the hunting spot, killed a couple trees tying their horses and made a mess of the trails to top camp where we are at and the elk came a couple days to late that bottom camp finally saw a couple trails on the way out a day early. We stayed till the bitter end, up there 11 days straight with no power or running water and the elk showed the night before as we saw beds in the snow of them arriving the day we left, the day after the season closed. No deer this year either, not in Washington nor Montana as some family issues came up so Montana was taken off the table and Washington, I've only shot 1 here my entire life as the hunting is just not that good for deer, not like Montana and other places.
Usually I pull about 3 or 4 rabbit from our property and some more from a farm I get to hunt and so far I've only pulled two total of both places. Ducks, they still have not really arrived and I've shot 1. I had the chance to shoot the a couple of hens after the drake but my gun failed to extract for the 1st time ever. Still had a great time hunting but had a great decoy spread but the ones that were around were flying high so no chance of calling them in.
We are having two tenants move out end of November and mid December so no hunting while trying to fix and fill the places with renters.
Spirits are still good and January I hopefully can get back at Ducks and/or rabbits to try to fill the freezer but it will take a lot to equal one elk. Out of 10 hunters from our group, only 1 was taken. The 4 horse guys, got nothing but the stink eye from messing things up. Hopefully they find a new home for next year.
