We had two badgers just show up and stare us down. Didn't recover one but did the other. I got a picture with the one recovered, about a 20lb female. Really nice hide but we were too far out, it was pretty hot and would have ruined shooting for the rest of the day if I skinned it and we got ice. I really wanted to bring it home but it was not in the cards. This one, we were shooting whistle pigs and I just happened to look behind and there it was at 50yrds watching us. It took a shot in the lungs with the .17hmr as it was turning to go away and went down a hole. You could here the gurgling of the lungs as it succumbed to the shot. The son-in-law found it as I couldn't see it. You could just see the tail and maybe a foot. It was too big to pull back out so we had to dig it out and the only thing I had in the truck was a flat flag bar. I tried to convince him to put his hand in first but he would not do it but I had some long pliers I used to do the test to make sure it was dead.

Good for you! I really like shooting badgers but there's not as many as there was two or three years ago. I haven't seen any this year other than a couple road kills and one that someone else shot. To bad you couldn't have kept it. I've shot a couple I wish I'd have kept, one was a 30 pounder and the other was an average female that was furred out really nice. Badgers have about the nicest looking pelt of any predator, they make a nice rug to hang on the wall.

I really did want to keep it but it just wasn't going to be very easy as I really didn't want to ruin it for my son-in-law as this was probably the only time he was going, unless my daughter can get him to go now since I left her my .17hmr.

I've shot quite a few badgers. Don't know why I never kept one. I've seen them made into rugs and they really look nice but a full mount would be nice too.

Just don't shoot one to keep during mating season, they smell horrible. This one was fine.

Oh I know! I've shot a few like that. I got that on my hands axd it took 3 or 4 days to go away. They can give a skunk a run for the money.
