Went for a little ride today, we saw lot's of ducks. Widgeon, goldeneye, mallards, pintail, redheads, teal and of course mud hens. Even six Swans. Most ducks I've seen around here in awhile.

Well, I had a good day yesterday at the pond. Here the limit is 7 and was done by 9:30 with not much flying. Things went well. 4 teals and later got 3 large mallards

Been trying to get my daughter, who lives back down there again in Mountain Home, to start going bird hunting.

Been a tough duck season as the first 4 times out this year was a big goose egg and I got my truck super stuck and it took a large front end loader to get me out, and barely at that. Last weekend I finally got 2 and yesterday I brought home 5 but the cool thing was out of that was 3 woodies, which I'd never shot before out of this pond. Was worried I'd lost a bunch of my bird shooting mojo and at first I did but didn't take long to get it back. Our Eastern Washington trip to Othello was canceled for the 2nd year in a row and that is usually a big take home of birds. A cool part though was near the end of the shoot a young eagle swooped down into the pond to take one of my decoys and couldn't seem to get a grip on it and eventually ended up in the pond and swimming toward a small log to get out to get out of the pond. He flew to a close tree and shook the water out of his wings and contemplated life for a bit before flying off.

Glad you're getting out to do some hunting. I'm not much of a duck hunter. I haven't seen hardly any ducks or geese around here this year. A few but not like they've been in the past. I've heard those woodies are pretty good eating. Keep after them.

Last day of the season for me and I brought home 4, only 3 to eat as one was another type of merganser. He had problems of a plastic ring around his head and it went in his mouth like a bit for a horse. He is now out of misery. I'll be an expert soon on mergansers as I've never shot one and now 2 different types in two weekends. Got two mallards and a ring neck duck. Stayed the entire time and closed at 5pm but the last bird I saw flying was the Ring Neck around 12:30 to 1pm, or so. Hit one but didn't bring it down so I was 4 for 5. Just saw a puff of feathers and felt like I was on it so it was a surprise when it kept flying. The Mallards, one was at the extreme right and a bit farther than I like and he was goofing off for about 1/2 hour and wouldn't come closer. Another finally landed on the extreme left. They started quacking and were swimming toward each other like long lost brothers until they were 20yds in front of me. One got fly swatted and the other got dropped trying to leave. The ring neck duck, I was looking down and heard something buzz the blind. Nothing. Looked down again and same thing going the other direction and still nothing. Not long after that he landed in the water. Yelled to try and get him up but he just looked at me dumbfounded, his choice, shot him there. Was going to possibly get it stuffed but looked at the price, sticker shock and he will now be going in the freezer, breasted. Was in perfect shape, almost like it had a heart attack. Wish the Woodies would have been in better shape I would probably break down and have one of them done. Looks like they are about 275.00 to get stuffed, and up here tax would put it at around 300.00. Too much for my blood.

Still not many ducks being seen around here. I saw one bunch when I was on my way to town last week. Not seeing hardly any on the water though, 3 or 4 mallards and one golden eye a few weeks ago. Did you ever try to eat a merganser? I tried one years ago, awfullest thing I ever tasted. LOL

Nope, did not try the merganser. I was amply warned by a couple of people that evidently have tried.
Only thing open here is cottontail rabbit for game meat, and that will close in just over a month.

Yeah, cottontail still open here. I think until the end of Feb. Bobcat open until about the 15th. Some people eat them I guess. Speckle bellies open until the 13th and snow goose until Mar. 26th but not seeing hardly any of them. Don't know what happened, used to see great clouds of them.

Broper, I was trying to get registered to be part of the forum, but it tells me registration is no longer available. Is this forum and IHV still operating?
Thanks,
Bob in Melba

You can still talk and comment but actually it's kind of defunct since there's no more IVH club anymore. There's a lot of lookers here but 72camaro and I are the only ones that will comment or say anything.

What happened with IVH? Not enough members, too much work? I'll try to start posting in other threads. I have some yote and rock chuck pictures to share.

Okay, so I just tried posting in the Whistlepigs and rock chuck threads and I'm not allowed to without logging in or registering. Is there away around this?

Hmm, don't know what's up. Why would you be able to post on this thread and not those. We don't have a moderator any more so I don't know. Seems like interest in the club was gradually going down for a while. We were having trouble getting members to attend and participate in any events. Then covid hit and we didn't have any nplace to meet, every place was shut down. After the restrictions let up we stated meeting again and only a few came back then eventually just quit coming. Gary and I tried every way we could to keep the club going but when the president, secretary and one member are the only ones attending it just wasn't happening. So, we finally gave up. Nobody has ever shown any interest in starting up again. For some reason there just isn't any interest.
