Gary & I were out today, we saw two but they were darting around in the weeds and we couldn't get a shot at them. It won't be long though.

I can't wait!! Shot, trapped or beat one over the head with a shovel to make over 150 for the season last year. The shovel incident was crazy. I was running water from a pump and it went into the hole, that little sucker popped up and looked at me from 5 feet away. I ran back to the house to get my .22, but it was too far so I just grabbed a shovel I had outside the garage. Sure enough, he popped up again and wham, got him in the head with hand to hand combat!!
Last season I usually went outside a few times a day. In the spring it was easy as the babies are still dumb. Averaged about 10 a day early on, then it was 1's and 2's. Already see their mounds in one of my pastures. Funny thing my son and I did when we saw them out. We would hop on a four wheeler and drive by them a few times. Then on one of the times around either my son or I would get off and stand near the hole. Sure enough as the 4 wheeler drove away, that little head would come out and bam, add another one to the list!! Learned that trick while in Narcotics with the New Jersey State Police. We would clear the block and 2 or 3 of us would set up in an abandoned house and as soon as everyone left, the critters would come out and sell their drugs. We called out the seller, where they hid their stuff and in 30 minutes had 3-5 in custody with all their dope. Worked in Afghanistan too but I will keep that tactic to myself

I think those might be gophers in your pasture and around your yard. What wew call whistle pigs here are piute ground squirrels. They typically live out in the desert. Never seen them on irrigated ground. We shoot hundreds of them every year out on BLM ground. They go under ground in June or July when it gets hot and don't resurface until late Jan. or Feb. By late March/April they are out in force. Tons of fun to shoot. If you're interested a few of us varminters meet every Wednesday at Tom's Cabin right outside Emmett at 11:00. Come and join us if you want. When it gets warmer we take our guns then go out in the hills and shoot whistle pigs after lunch.

Gary and I were out in the hills for awhile this afternoon. Nice and sunny, about 48 degrees. There were quite a few squirrels out. They won't hardly sit still, just run from hole to hole. We did manage to shoot 8 or 10 though. We were shooting centerfires.

Time to break out the rimfires then and make another trip. We got 7" of snow last night so even the back yard bunnies haven't been out. Only season open right now.

Yeah we got 6" of snow, supposed to get a couple more inches on Monday. Weather's supposed to be off and on rain and snow all week. Probably won't be to good for squirrel shootin'.

Gary and I were out yesterday afternoon for awhile. There's still quite a bit of snow on the ground so we weren't expecting to see many. I didn't even take a rifle. Gary had his AR .223 along. We got out there and the squirrels were all over the place, running all over the snow. Gary must have shot 25 or 30. I just spotted for him. Fun time.

Good for you guys. I'll be trying to get my taxes done and then working the trip to Idaho and Montana in a handful of months.

Gary and I went out yesterday afternoon and taught aerobatics to a few whistle pigs. They're not out in full force yet but there was enough to keep it interesting and fun. We probably shot 20 or so. There were cattle scattered around so we had to keep an eye on them. Gary had his .223 and I was shooting my .218. It was a beautiful day, clear, sunny, 59 degrees and just a very slight breeze.
