I'm from Wisconsin so attending meetings would be a problem, but I do a lot of predator calling here and I like to support hunting organizations. At the moment I am president of Wisconsin Bowhunters Association, the country's oldest and largest state bowhunting association.
My son-in-law however, lives in Caldwell. He's a good hunter but hasn't had a lot of experience calling predators. When he lived here, the very first set I took him to, on his very first coyote hunt, I called in a pack of 6 coyotes (don't ask how many were shot). I tried to convince him that it wasn't always like that, but he was hooked.
He now lives in Caldwell and I'm heading out there this week to spend the holidays with the family - and get out coyote hunting. I've bowhunted elk in Idaho several times but haven't stayed to call critters.
Although we have seen coyotes in the elk mountains, we have encountered much more wolf sign, as well as seeing and hearing wolves. Here in WI, where we have wolves (which we can't shoot) they've driven most of the coyotes out, so I'm thinking we will be calling in the more open country like the Owyhee's or the Birds of Prey Conservation Area. Although he's heard there are a lot of coyotes north of Caldwell, but OnXHunt shows a lot of private land there. I try to stay away from private land unless we have permission. Is it generally difficult to secure permission out there for coyote hunting after the deer/elk seasons are over? Here in Wisconsin it can be tough but when I hunt in the Dakotas, the ranchers welcome us with open arms.
When you resume meetings, I'm sure he (Josh) would like to attend. His son, who is just turning 11, will be interested too.
Keep call'n,
WI Caller
