This morning Bob and I took a drive out through the desert. On some not so good lava flow roads, rough and steep to say the least. We didn't see any coyotes, or badgers, and no squirrels! We did see a few ravens flying around!
We did stop at a spot that we could go no further in the pickup, we would have to have a quad or a UTV to go ny further. At that point we were at the head of a huge canyon with a bunch of finger draws going out from the location, so Bob pulled out a hand call and made a couple of courses of dying rabbit blues, we waited to see if anything would respond, thinking that we would be able to get a pup to come see what was going on! "NO GO!" Nothing showed! So Bob pulled out one of his 2 Rivers howlers and howled a couple times, still not even a reply from anything! We finally got the pickup turned around and away down the mountain we go. So that spot was a dead end, we couldn't find away to go any farther, and the area had been used pretty hard by other people, 4 wheelers and utv's. But now we know what is out there, our minds are satisfied with the area.
We left that area and went on down the road to another road 10-12 miles away, that we knew went out into the desert, the road loops around for about 60-70 miles. We saw alot of sign of water everywhere, the road that we had been on in the prior fall, now had trench washed down both sides of the 2 track road, and there was flowing water crossing the road at every low crossing! There is so much water the grasses are still green, as well as the sage and buck brush! The bad part is the grasses are so thick and tall that you couldn't see anything unless it was tall like a deer or antelope. maybe a coyote, but it would be half covered by grass!
We did find a few rockchucks in one spot! We shot 4 of them, Bob got 2 and I got 2. Bob was shooting his 22-250 with 55 gr Soft point rounds (Explode Varmints). I was shooting my 6mm Remington with 73 gr Barnes Verminator bullets (Disintegrate Varmints). We quit shooting and left the remaining chucks for seed, we will be back in the spring to check it out! All the miles we traveled today we didn't see one stupid coyote or even a pup from this years crop! Oh Well Always Next Time! Sorry there are no pictures of the dead chucks, to far from the road and up on a bunch of rocks, Can't or don't want to climb the rocks and fall and kill myself - Bob either! I wouldn't let Bob even try!
Till Next Time! Gary!
