Bob, Brent and I spent the day with the Curlew Crew yesterday talking to people out on the NCA (National Conservation Area) on Pleasant Valley Road South of Boise. The National Guard brought a Bradley Tank for people to check-out, (the kids that came by loved it) they were up to talk to people about responsible shooting and to let people know their areas of operation, to protect the public and the lives of the Soldiers on the ground! Recently a soldier in the Idaho Falls area was killed by a stray bullet from an irresponsible shooter or hunter! The Soldier was hit in the head, ending his life!
Scott Gibson (NRA Instructor) from Underground Guns was there set up to teach visitors gun safety and allow those that have never fired a gun the opportunity to do so under controlled conditions, visitors were actually able shoot an AR15, giving them a better idea about how and what it is like to be a shooter and shooting a rifle. The idea is the possibility of changing a non-shooters mind about guns and shooting!
Heather from the Intermountain Bird Observatory (IBO)was on hand in-spite of just getting over a flu! We also had an Audubon Society Raptor Specialist on hand, there was also a young lady (Madeline) in the Graduate program at BSU doing a survey of hunters and shooter that use the NCA for shooting and hunting. A representative (Natalie Turley) from Idaho Power was there also, she brought and showed us all a piece of high tension power cable that had been shot by an irresponsible so called hunter/shooter. This kind of damage costs us all, Idaho Power just passes this cost onto their customers on our Power Bills! This is irresponsible behavior, shooter should never shoot at anything that can be destroyed, such as these cables and power poles, towers, ect.....
The Idaho Varmint Hunters took the BBQ grill along with hotdogs and sausages to feed the crew lunch and some visitors also. Everyone had a great time, sharing lunch, talking and learning about the land, the Long-billed Curlews, and the Partner organizations that are involved in the conservation of the Long-billed Curlew with the Curlew Crew! If you or your organization are interested in Partnering with the IBO and the Curlew Crew, Contact the Heather Hayes at the BSU Intermountain Bird Observatory, and Join the group! Email: HeatherMHayes@boisestate.edu
In this case the more the merrier! To get the word out far and wide about the Long-billed Curlew, along with the Conservation and protection of our Public Lands in Idaho and across the country!
