The Christmas Songdog Challenge turned out pretty good! We had 10 teams turned out to register to hunt the tournament!
Although it being December, and we all know that calling coyotes in December is a tough proposition in the least! Some teams did come in with coyotes!
The night before the tournament, the wind was blowing hard and it began to rain about 10:30 pm for about 15 minutes where I live, I could hear it hitting the roof! Lolled me to sleep!
The morning of the tournament dawned very cold, but calm with no wind. so off to the hills Bob and I went! Not far up the hill we ran into snow. Our first stand, we were able to pull off the road, albeit was hard to do, dur to the fact that there was about 11-12 inches of snow the pickup didn't want to plow through it very well. In fact at one point we were on a little hill, Bob had slowed down to try to park, the pickup had stopped moving forward and was sitting in place on the road spinning it's tires, We finally got it parked and walked off up a little hump, while walking through the 11" of snow, Bob stepped in a badger hole and fell down. After he recovered and got back to his feet, we went on to our calling location sat up and began calling, the wind was blowing about 10 mph across the snow swept area, just about froze my face and fingers off! We sat for about 20 mins, Bob told me he saw a coyote come up the end of the ridge we were on and stuck it's head up over a small hump to look at what was making all the noise, then it took off as quickly as it had come in! we seen one other coyote during the day, which was about 800 yards away running across a ridge into a big draw.
We went back to the tournament check-in and waited for the teams to begin showing up! Bob and I had run into one of the teams out in the desert, they asked if they could check-in right there, they were going home, they had said that they had educated a couple coyotes while out calling!, So I took their blocks bag and told them that we hoped to see them at the 2019 Idaho Coyote Classic (ICC) on January 3-5, 2019.
Team Gene & Derek won the tournament with a total of 4 coyotes
Team William & Howard took 2nd place with 2 Coyotes.
There were no others that brought coyotes in! Like I said, December is really tough to call or find coyotes!
Great job guys! Thank You all for braving the cold and working so hard to call the coyotes in an attempt to win the tournament!!
