I am looking to buy or build an upped for big game hunting for my AR I’ve been a big fan of the 6.5 since it first came out but watching Blane Anthony hunt with the 300 blk has peeked an interest in the caliber for me.. does anyone have any experience hunting with either or both calibers that could give me some input I then. Mostly looking to do up to deer sized game or maybe elk if either is capable..

My son-in-law has shot two deer with the .300 blk and I think both were about 100yds or less. The .300 needs to be close because of the low velocity. The BC of the 6.5 though is impressive. If it was one or the other I'd probably do whichever has the most ft/lbs at 150yds and I'll bet it is the 6.5. They both will be accurate enough for deer for 100yds but I'd think the 6.5 has a bit more legs. He has bought a 6.5 but does not have any range time yet nor real world big game shooting with it yet and is a bolt instead of an AR15 like the .300 blk.
I'd be going .308 AR10 or find one in .300 win mag if I was wanting to really hit it hard in an AR platform and at a minimum a .243 but cost wise I'd be looking at the .308 and still probably not go past 200yds or 250yds with the short barrel. I think DPMS makes them in several calibers if you are interested.
I've been given 55 grain for my AR15 that supposed to be a deer load, really, but shot placement would be paramount at that light and I'm still not sold on trying it. My normal goto load is actually 40 grain for prairie dogs with the AR platform but I run a 1:12 twist for that. I like to match the bullet and velocity that I think will be the most likely to drop without really going overkill.
