Hey y'all,
My name is Mark Irving and (as the title says) I'm a graduate student in the History Masters of Arts program at Boise State. I'm taking a Public History course and we are doing projects relating to the history of the Orchard Combat Training Center (OCTC) out south of Boise where the Army National Guard trains and where I and many people I know go to shoot ground squirrels. The project I have decided to undertake is the creation of a Shooter's Guide to the OCTC. It will be in the form of a tri-fold pamphlet containing a short informative history of the site along with a list of some at-risk plant and animal species. I also would like to include a list of potential best practices for shooters who use this area so that we can be the best possible stewards of the site that we can be. As many of you who regularly shoot out there know, trash accumulation is a bit of an issue.
This is where y'all come in. In public history, it is important to interface with the public in every step of project planning and execution and to use the input from the public to reflect on the project. I want to know what kinds of questions you all may have regarding the site, what kinds of things you all would like to see in an informative tri-fold pamphlet, and also any recommendations regarding what kinds of things might be included in a list of best practices. Also, if any of you know of any other organizations or associations that you think should be party to the creation of this pamphlet, I am all ears. I would like to come to one of your meetings, or interface in person in some way, but I will also provide contact information in case that is unlikely.
I also have been, and will be, meeting periodically with some of the staff out at Gowen Field who help manage the site. Together with them and people like yourselves, I'd like this project to speak to everybody's needs (as far as that is possible). But in order to do this I could really use the help of anyone who is interested. I'll be checking back on this forum regularly (a couple times a week) to see if I get any interest. If, for whatever reason, I don't answer promptly you can email me at markirving1@u.boisestate.edu. Also, for those who want some basic information on the site here is a decent overview: www.globalsecurity.org/military/facility/orchard.htm
Happy hunting and may you always shoot straight!
