I'm Brian, I've been shooting/hunting for about 44 years now. Hand loading for 30 years. I got into long distance shooting about 10 years ago. Generally I shoot a Savage .243 1:9 twist for varmints Coyotes and targets Mostly 105 grn. A-Max @ 2900 fps., unless I'm wandering through the brush trying to spook up rabbits, then it's a semi auto 223... much easier to hit them on the run. I can tag Rock Chucks out to 750 yards or so with the 243 setup, Whistle pigs, when I can find them, not so much, 400 to 500 max on them. Hoping to meet people that can help break past that 750 yard barrier I've run into, I know.. upgrade the rifle... not right now. Also it seems all the Whistle pigs that used to be in the Glenns Ferry area are just gone. Any idea where they all went?

Hello Brian, And Welcome to the Idaho Varmint Hunters Forums, We are glad you found us! The more the Merrier! The 243 is a good cartridge, better than most people give it credit! I shoot a 6mm Remington, and I love it, long range shooting is great with it! Critter wacker extraordinaire, It wacked 16 Badgers last spring , to late summer season. and a few jackrabbits, squirrels, and assorted other critters! I shoot a 75 gr Hollow Point at about 3700 fps. I shot one badger at 400 yards on a run! That's about the extent of eye sight any more, beyond that I am not able to pick them out! Old Eyes I guess! I have to use Binos to see that far away! I have a question regarding Glenn's Ferry? Where are you shooting squirrels in the Glenn's Ferry area that the squirrels are so low populated?? You do know the only area that you can legally shoot squirrels in the neck of the woods is North of Glenn's Ferry along the East side of the Snake River! The squirrels are protected East of Glenn's Ferry and North of the Snake River all the way to Island Park, up along the Idaho Border then back to Glenn's Ferry! Just don't want you to be getting into trouble! Again Welcome! Gary IVH Sec/Tres/Owner

No I didn't know they were protected anywhere, either way I've gone north of GF in the Bennett hills and Camas prairie. Not at all this year, need a new trigger and more range time to come up with a new load.for the new rifle, maybe work on something lighter as well. Only thing I've shot this year has been some jacks with the 223. I'll be going to Buhl for some rock chucks next weekend, have family with a place that has areas with up to 1k yds. We'll go back in the next day and clear out a few coyote that may have come in to eat.
