Shouldn't be protected in that area I don't think. They may have put out a warning about the plague but you cab still shoot them. Just be careful and don't handle them.

No any area South of the Payette River, to Glenns Ferry, and East of the Snake River is open to hunting squirrels! Unless you were on Private Property, please get a written permission from the Land Owner to be on his proerty! Or if you were on the Birds of Pray area. You can hunt squirrels on that land, but you can only use a shotgun, no rifles or handguns! This area described is the only legal area to hunt ground squirrels (Piute squirrels) in Idaho. Here is a map that was sent to us after the Fight we had with IDF&G. It shows the areas that are off limit to hunting ground squirrels! Any area in the yellow is not protected. If you notice the yellow area between the Brown and the Red over to the blue area is open to hunting (the Treasure Valley area). The Red area encompasses the Northern Section of Owyhee County, don't hunt there. The Big Brown area is Federally Protected, you hunt there, you will go to Federal Jail! You can hunt the Colombian Ground squirrel anywhere in the State.
