So I have been gettin an itch to try squirrel, I have read in many different forums that a lot of people eat squirrels, so I was wondering if anyone on here knew what types of squirrels around here where edible and which I should stay away from.??. Of course I'm talking tree squirrels here I don't even touch ground squirrels .

Tree squirrels are edible but I think they're protected in Idaho. The nearest place I know of that has a squirrel season is Calif. I think Arizona does too. I wouldn't touch a ground squirrel myself. If your serious go a little north and get some Columbian squirrels, they're bigger and probably a little safer. Legal to shoot too.

Bob, that is not right about the tree squirrels! The only tree squirrels we have around here are the Fox Squirrels, you know the big red/orange ones that run across the street and are running along the power lines! Yeah those squirrels! They are open to hunting year round, they are not protected! And they are good table fair! My Grandpa and I used to hunt them and eat them all the time when I was young! Haven't done it since he passed! Just not the same without Pops being there with me!
As for the other tree squirrels of Idaho, they are protected. The Red Pine (small grey body, with black tail)squirrel is protected!!
Yes! Please stay away from any squirrels that live in the ground! They carry diseases that we don't want any part of!
From IDF&G: Some animals are classified as “predators” or as “unprotected” and can be hunted and taken all year. Animals classified as predators in Idaho include coyotes, raccoons, jackrabbits, skunks, weasels, and starling. The most frequently hunted unprotected animals include marmots, fox squirrels, porcupines and Columbian ground squirrels, English sparrows, Eurasian-collared doves, and feral pigeons. These species may be taken in any amounts and at any time by holders of the appropriate valid Idaho hunting, trapping or combination hunting license, provided such taking is not in violation of state, county, or city laws, ordinances or regulations.
Gary BTW: You can't shoot them or fire a gun in the City Limits or the City Park!
