6-20-2016 Badgerin'
Bob and I decided to give it a try this morning, we went out to the BLM, to see if we could find a badger or two to hunt. We got out there at about 6am, it was a cool clear day, with a few wispy clouds. The Weatherman says he was calling for 92 degrees for the high today! So I told Bob, that we needed to be out there early to beat the heat! Well as it turned out, we were a bit to early, it was too cool for the critters, not even a ground squirrel was rustling. So we drove on into the BLM, looking for signs of life, we found a few coyotes sign, but not much more, at around 9am the squirrels began to show them selves! Bob and I both thought the squirrels season was over for this year, but to our surprise there were a bunch of squirrels out! In fact everywhere you would look, there were squirrels! So we came to this one spot, where there were a lot of squirrels! Bob was carrying his 204 Ruger in a Remington 700 SPS. He stopped the truck, and shot a few squirrels with it. I as usual am carrying my Remington 700V in 22-250 Remington.
Across this big flat area was a hill, Bob ranged it at 150 Yards. the hill had squirrels running and standing everywhere on it! I had reloaded some new rounds with some powders I had never tried before, that I wanted to test! I told Bob, that I was going to shoot the new loads, he said OK! I picked out a whistlepig on the hill, cranked the scope to 18 and focused it in on the squirrel, I squeezed the trigger, and the squirrel disintegrated into little pieces. Thinking it was a fluke, I told Bob, I am going to try that again! Again I picked out a squirrel, I pin pointed the squirrel for Bob, and told him to watch it, so he did lookout for me, and again nailed it! You can tell when you hit the squirrel, because with the Hollowpoint Bullet, you get that whack report of the bullet hitting meat! Even at 150 yards it is quite loud, enough to know you made a good shot! Man I was impressed with the loads! I have been shooting Hodgdons H380 for about 40 years, every 22-250 that I have owned, it shot well in, so I just stuck to that combo of bullet and powder, because I knew it well! Until recently! I have decided to try out some new rounds for the old 22-250, and I am working on new loads for my 6mm Remington! Which I will be taking out as soon as I can get a load that it likes and I am comfortable with, I guess I just need to go out and shoot it a lot more to get used to it!! Soon! Very Soon!!!
Anyway, back to the badgers, Bob and I were driving around checking out some new country that I had never been in before, and as we come up over a small rise in the road, there were 2 badgers running down the road, they came out a hole they had dug right in the road. Bob stopped the truck, I took a good rest on the door, and just as one badger stopped and turned sideways to look at us, I dropped the hammer on him, the other badger went down a hole. I walked over to the dead badger and checked him out, and took pictures, after pictures I walked back to the truck, and Bob yells and says bring your handgun, so I went, pulled my Springfield 1911A1 Loaded - 45acp, Bob says the other badger is right down the hole looking up at us, so I looked and sure enough, it was down there staring up at us! So I settled the sights on its head and sent a round down the hole, the badger didn't even quiver, DRT! 2 badgers down! That 225 gr Flat Nose Lead Bullet smoking out there at 900fps, stops them in their tracks!
Here are the pictures for the proof, I had a witness to the incident! Neither of the badgers were huge, but a badger is a badger! We may have saved some Long-Billed Curlew nests, eggs and babies from being eaten!
