Slob Hunters, Shooters, and Recreationalists,
Bob and I were out hunting badgers one morning recently, while out in the sandhills, we came across several sites where people have thrown out or dumped trash, or have been shooting and left their trash, shot up targets, shot up water and pop bottles, old TV’s, empty shotgun shells, handgun cartridges, rifle cartridges, and other assorted items on the ground after shooting it up! Then just walked away from it, leaving it there to foul the area, which means other people will be unable to enjoy that area, due to the eye sore and mess left behind by injurious people!
But the thing that affected me most severely; the most appalling thing to me is the fact that hunters and shooters have no respect for private property! Bob and I come across a control panel for a water well pump, out in the BLM. Someone, an irresponsible person or persons had shot the panel with a rifle! Fortunately, the rounds didn’t penetrate the metal box, looks like it was shot with a 22LR.
I was shocked, disgusted, and disconcerted, that someone could be that immoral and despicable, to do such a dreadful act! Is there a point to this kind of behavior? If so I would like to know what it is!! I would never intentionally shoot an immanent object (excluding targets that I placed out to shot), especially an object that belongs to someone else. A person may as well walk up to the object owners house and begin to shot his house and vehicles full of holes, destroying his property! It is the same concept, if you think about it! The Rancher was fortunate that someone didn’t use a highpower rifle, and shoot right through the control panel, that would have caused a lot of damage for the Rancher to have to repair or replace!!!
What is the point of shooting something like a control panel that obviously belongs to another person, the control panel is there for a good reason, not there for someone’s pleasure of shooting it up, just because they think they can do it without repercussion for shooting it! There was also trash near the panel, which some irresponsible person had decided to dump on the BLM, instead of taking to the Landfill or putting it in a garbage bag, and placing it their garbage can for the garbage man to take away!
What is it that makes people become so irresponsible with a gun? Why do people think that it is OK to dump their trash on public land? What is the point of shooting a piece of private property, like the control panel? If the bullet had gone through the metal of the panel, it would have been very expensive for the rancher that owns the panel, not to mention that his cattle would have to go without water, because an irresponsible person or persons considered it fun to shot this guy’s important piece of expensive private property!
Also, if you drive around on the BLM, there is a Natural Gas line that runs across the land, well under the ground, but above the ground are these tall yellow plastic pole markers (picture below), that read, Natural Gas Pipe Line. Every one of those pole that you come to has either been shot full of holes, or has been bent over or broken off, this is a disgrace to Us as hunters and shooters. There is also a big fiberglass marker on a pole shaped like a tent, it has 3 big letters on it, I am sure it is so the Gas Company can fly over and know where they are along the pipeline! Do you think that people could refrain from shooting the number plate full of holes, OH NO! It too has sustained a large number of hits from a rifle or handgun. This kind of behavior is senseless, all it accomplishes is to give Us hunters and shooters a blackeye, and eventually we all will be locked out of the BLM lands for good! None of us will be able enjoy the day out hunting and shooting, because we will have no place to go to hunt, unless we pay some land owner huge amounts of money to trespass on his land to hunt! I for one don’t have deep pockets to be able to secure private hunting land! What I have seen of land owners in Idaho, you are just going to have to stop hunting, because the land owners will not allow you to hunt, fish, or trespass at any cost! So the days of us hunting will be gone forever! Closing BLM will not just be in Idaho, it will be all BLM land throughout the USA! The only place you will be able to go to shot will be the local private shooting range facility! And then you will be paying a hefty membership fee, because the private range will have you over a barrel (pun intended)!!
Please people, hunters, and shooters, please stop this kind of behavior, it looks really bad on ALL of us! If and when you go shooting on the BLM, please carry garbage bags with you! If you drive out to the BLM, and decide to stop to shoot a target, please if you “CARRY IT IN! CARRY IT OUT!!” Take your trash with you, and if you are picking it up, please pickup trash others have left as well! If you help a little bit, you help us all a lot! If everyone that visits the BLM will do their part and pickup a little bit (one bag full) there will be no trash out on the BLM, or anywhere else for that matter!
You have probably seen the pictures of my pickup loaded with trash that I have picked up, while out hunting ground squirrels, actually I got very little shooting done, but her is a picture or two for you to help illustrate what it is I am saying:
This the result of a couple hours of picking up trash.
My final thoughts: Hunters & Shooters, if you want to shoot an inanimate object such as your house, or your pickup, car, or targets, boxes, bottles, TV’s, Computer Monitors, or whatever else you want to shoot, just step outside your house with your gun, and begin blasting away at your own stuff, things that you won, on your property that you have to clean up! Or better yet, have someone else come to your house and property, and begin shooting your stuff, then watch them walk away from the mess that they just created on your front lawn, and then “Think About” if you like to have your property shot up, and a huge mess to have to clean up, of which you have to replace, all the stuff that was shot full of holes and is no longer any good, then go and replace it with money that you can’t afford to part with or don’t have!
No one else is going to come to your private property to clean up the mess, and replace the broken things that were shot up!
Why would people think that anyone is going to follow them around and clean up their messes on BLM lands!!! Even though there are organizations that do go out and do BLM Clean Up Days, it does cost the organizations (Idaho Varmint Hunters Club, Timber Butte Outdoors, Underground Guns, Emmett Rough Riders ATV Club) their time and money to coordinate, and host such endeavors, just a small part on their behalf to help insure that the Government does not shut down the Public Lands from our use, all together!
The BLM belongs to all of Us, everyone needs to be responsible and do their part to conserve the BLM, so that we will be able to use it as we please, without the worry of it being shut down from day to day!
What are your thoughts, how does it make you feel; when you go out to the BLM and all you see is garbage everywhere, trash thrown down along the roads, piles of trash dumped from someone’s pickup, or car, areas where people shoot all the time strewn with remnants of old targets, and trash, couches, mattresses, bedsprings, TV’s, easy chairs, every household item you can think of!
Last week Bob and I were out hunting, we were way out in the desert, on a 2 track road, miles away from anywhere, we found a pile of old carpet padding, tackstrip, and other assorted odds and ends! We also found big piles of fencing wire.
Come on people, the BLM is not your private dumping grounds, the BLM land belongs to all of us for Recreation, Enjoyment, Family fun time together! Not swimming through a trash strewn field. There has been a bunch of dead animals that farmers, ranchers have taken out there and dumped, how healthy is that for everyone, and every animal concerned! I say it is just ignorance & laziness! It has to stop!!
Why do people think it is OK to take their junk out to the desert/BLM land and dump it! IT IS NOT OK TO DO! It is called littering, better yet, it is actually POLLUTING Our Land, and it is an Eye Sore! It is reprehensible for a person to do such an act! These people are the ones that are the first to complain or bellyache, that they are shutout of the BLM public dumping grounds; because they were the ones that were the instrument of the closure!
But, let me ask you this, do you think that they will stand up and say that they were the one that were actually doing the dumping? ABSOLUTELY NOT!!! Also! They don’t care if it affects anyone else either! Just themselves! I wish that a bunch of these idiot people would be caught by Law Enforcement, and made martyrs of, prosecuted to the full extent of the Law, so that others would get the idea that it is not OK to dump or litter anywhere!
