About 9:15 this a.m. (Wednesday). First spotted it at about 250 yds. popped up a couple times but wouldn't stay long enough for a shot. So, I moved up the road and got about 50 yds. closer. Came out again, went about 5 yds. left then back to the hole. Finally came out and sat long enough to give me a shot. I held on the top of it's head and shot right over the top of it, disappeared down the hole and I figured I'd messed up. After watching a couple minutes I pulled out a rabbit distress mouth call, blew on that for about 30 seconds and just as I stopped blowing it popped up again. On all fours looking directly at me, about all I could see was it's head, not much more than a 6" target. I held right on this time, when I shot it just disappeared. I didn't see any dust from a missed shot. Watched for a couple minutes, gave another toot on the call, watched another couple minutes. Didn't see any movement so I drove out there. The hole was on the back side of the mound, so I got to look and there it layed right in the entrance, DRT! Pulled it out and it was a young female. Ruger #1, 6x Leupold, 40 gr. Nosler Varmageddon, 14 gr. Lil' Gun powder, lasered 200 yds. even. Guess the little .218 is flatter shooting than I thought. Not bad for a supposedly obsolete cartridge that came out in 1937, one of the first .224 varmint cartridges. So, that's my story and I'm sticking to it! I'm going to try out how to post a picture, if I can't do it I'll get the "Ol' Varmint" to do it for me.
