Over the years 2 or 3 handcalls have served me well.
The first call I bought was the light green Circe Jackrabbit enclosed reed handcall.
As the first call I ever called a coyote with, I had and still have alot of confidence in it. The mouth piece is formed to fit your mouth, it is the right length, it fits in your hand well. It has the right tone to drag in those hard to call dogs.
The next most important is the OLT predator call. Made from walnut wood, it has the right shape that fits the hand, and the mouth piece is good to get a good seal for good hard blowing.
The OLT call has served me well over the years, it has called a bunch of coyotes for me. The one time that stands out in my mind, is the first time Brendan and I hunted together. Brendan was running the ecaller, using pup distress, then rabbit distress, and finished up with dominate male howls, we called 3 dogs to our stand. The 3 dogs come from way out, running along until they reached a draw, where they sat down, and just looked. I thought - crap, I have to get them to come closer, so while the male howls was running on the ecaller, I pulled out the OLT call, and began a jack distress, the coyotes got up, like a rocket began ranning toward us, so I stopped calling, they ran down into the draw in front of them and disappeared, I thought - Oh crap, then all of a sudden they were up out of the draw, then I started calling again, the coyote came to within 100 yards of us across a creek below us. That OLT call may be a production call, but it works great, and I will continue to use it with confidence.
The newest call to be recently added to the round up is the Zepp Rattler, man I tell you that call has a sound that just drives dogs crazy. The first time I used it, I called a dog, but the guy that I was calling for missed the shot twice. Even though I haven't called much with it, I still have confidence in it, and I will continue to use it, until it proves me wrong.
What is your favorite calls, and WHY?
Soon I am going to have time and money to get out to do some calling - I will let you all know how I do. If you are all out calling, tell us about your hunts, so we can share them with you.
Good Hunting!
