An Email that I received today! Thought you might like to share with the Idaho Varmint Hunters. The map clearly shows most of the area south of Boise is thought to be infested with plague. While not all will be infested, there is the possibility of running into some. So basic precautions should be taken such as not allowing dogs to get near Whistlepigs (so as not to get their fleas) and not to handle the carcases of any dead animals. www.cdhd.idaho.gov/pdfs/News/2015/052215%20Ground%20Squirrel%20Positive%20for%20Plague.pdf

Just looked and where we were shooting them is outside of the area, but not by a whole lot. I know we did not come across any that just appeared to have died without us helping them.

Any update or did they stay confined to the area infected?

Haven't heard anything lately about this area. The whistle pigs are are all underground now. There was an article about a guy in Utah that died from the plague. They're not sure how he got it but they found prarie dog mounds on his property.

So in the areas were the plague was, I take it that was a no hunting zone while they were out or was this an advisory?

I enjoyed our meeting last night and the talk about the plague in the whistle pigs that was presented by Bill, a biologist from Idaho F & G. I thought it was very interesting and contained a lot of good and useful information. Sounds like we need to be more careful and take some precautions that we haven't in the past.

Pray tell, what is the precautions and have they put out a new map of where the plague is?

I think he said they are working on a revised map. When out shooting it's best not to walk out among them, especially the dead ones. Don't handle them, if you do, use neoprene gloves. Mosquito spray will keep the fleas off of you, use plenty. Raid will kill the fleas. Badgers and coyotes are not affected by the plague but can carry the infected fleas. If you shoot a badger or coyote in a whistle pig area and you want to keep it, wear the gloves, spray the carcass with raid before you pick it up, put it in a large plastic bag, spray raid inside the bag and seal it. It's best not to let pet dogs out in whistle pig areas. I figure when I'm out shooting whistle pigs I'll just shoot from my truck and not get out any more than I have to.

Yeah, I don't want to get it. If you catch it soon enough it can be cured. There's one type that is spread by cats called pneumonic plague. Cats kill infected squirrels and eat them. The plague gets in their lungs and they develop a cough. The cat coughs on you,, you breathe that infected air into your lungs. If you get that type start making out your will, your a goner. There's no cure for it.
