The Idaho Varmint Hunters has teamed up with the Intermountain Bird Observatory/BSU/BLM/IDF&G, to assist in conservation of the Long Billed Curlew (LBC) that make the BLM sand hills South and West of Emmett to Middleton as the birds spring/summer homes to rear their chicks. In 1976 the population of the birds using the BLM ACEC area was 2000 breeding pairs. As of the year 2000 census of the birds, there was only 200 breeding pairs. In the past several years of observation, some birds have been GPS tagged, of those birds, 8 birds have been found shot and killed.
Even though these birds can be found in other areas of Idaho BLM and Private lands, the birds in this area are declining in numbers. We need to make sure that they are not completely lost from our area. Please help us stop the eventual extinction of this fragile natural resource. If we lose this bird, we will lose our right to our public lands in Idaho and other states.
IVH is working to insure that the BLM areas of local Idaho remain open for us to enjoy our right to hunt and shoot on Public lands. It is our intention to keep our BLM grounds open for everyone to use and enjoy. We ask shooters using the BLM ACEC Southwest of Emmett. to please if you see one of these birds, please don't shoot at it, don't make it a target, keep clear of it. These birds are aggressive when they have chicks in a nest. Do Not Approach the nest, stay clear a few hundred yards. If you find a dead bird, we ask you to please don't touch the bird, it is illegal to possess the bird, mark your GPS then call the Intermountain Bird Observatory (IBO) at 208-426-4354 or 208-426-5203 or you can call the Idaho Fish & Game at 208-465-8465. Tell them that you found a dead Long Billed Curlew, then give them the GPS Coordinates to the bird. They will send a Biologist to collect the bird for examination.
Here is a copy of the brochure that the IBO has put together for your info, and to help identify the LBC. Please be sure of your target. Make sure of the area behind your shooting. Make sure that you have a backstop for your bullets to hit.
Please don't shoot anything that is not legal to shoot. Please carry some trash bags when you go out to the sandhills, pickup your trash, targets, plastic bottles, any trash that you come across on the BLM. It is good for the land, and it is good for us sportsmen and women to help protect what is ours to enjoy.
Thank You for your time! If you have any ideas on how to protect the birds and animals of the sandhills we would be glad to hear them.
