The IVH Club, Loren and Gary have been honored to have been invited to attend a "Think tank, outreach, educational group" called the Long-billed Curlew (LBC)outreach and education group.
IVH was highly recommended for this honor by several note worthy individuals and groups, due to our involvement and activism in several important issues that affect hunters, shooters, and recreationists in Idaho, as well as across the Nation.
The Long Bill Curlew group is headed by Jay Carlisle,
Research Director, Intermountain Bird Observatory
Research Assistant Faculty, Department of Biological Sciences, Boise State University
Coordinator, Idaho Bird Conservation Partnership,
IBCP on Facebook works.bepress.com/jay_carlisle/
Also included are:
Jay Carlisle Idaho Bird Observatory/BSU
MJ Byrne Boise BLM Public Affairs
Charlie Justus Idaho Dept. of Fish and Game
Brian Marek Idaho Dept. of Fish and Game
Bill Bosworth Idaho Dept. of Fish and Game
Heidi Ware Idaho Bird Observatory
Scott D. Gibson Underground Guns
Joe Weldon Boise BLM
Jessica Gardetto BLM Public Affairs
Tate Fischer Boise BLM
Gary Mathews IVH Sec./Treas.
Loren Lunsford IVH President
Teresa Martin Emmett ATV Club
Dennis Martin Emmett ATV Club
Ron Spomer Private Citizen
Ray Ingram Emmett ATV Club
The main issue we will discuss is that Long-billed Curlew and other bird species that are suffering from illegal shooting out on the BLM grasslands that extend between Emmett, Middleton, and areas further west. I'm optimistic that we can find an agreeable solution but we all agree that having a broad representation of interests will be important for ensuring that we can agree on a solution that will work for everyone while still allowing access for the activities we care about. Organizations included on this e-mail include: Idaho Varmint Hunters, Emmett Rough Riders, Let's Move Emmett, Ron Spomer Outdoors, Underground Guns, BLM, Idaho Fish & Game, and Intermountain Bird Observatory (@ Boise State University).
This was a great evening of meeting, alot of information and ideas were presented to the board for educating the public the issue of illegal shooting of protected species, LBC, Hawks, Falcons, Owls, Eagles (Mainly Golden). The Board has high hopes, in that informational signs will sway the public into conserving the dwindling resource. The Long Billed Curlew numbers have dropped from a couple thousand pairs to a couple hundred breeding pairs.
The LBC is a migratory bird, returning to Idaho in March, and migrating to the Central Southern California area to winter. The LBC uses the BLM Sandhills sagebrush lands, south and west of Emmett, as their nesting grounds.
Jay Carlisle asks, if you are out in the foothills shooting or hunting this spring, and you see a LBC, to please use your GPS to record and report the location of the bird. You can contact me or Loren and we will take the info, and report it to the Intermountain Bird Observatory and Jay Carlisle.
Jay reported that they have placed GPS units on several of the birds to track their movements and migration routes. As ethical sportsmen and women, please do not shoot at or harass the birds if you see one, please keep your distance, and allow them to lay their eggs, and incubate them into a brood of chicks. The Adults will leave the sandhills in June, with the fledglings leaving Idaho in July and August.
Please Report your sighting of the LBC, and if you find a bird that has been killed from a gunshot.
Also, while talking to others, or out shooting in the sandhills, we ask that you, take the initiative to teach and talk to others about not illegally shooting protected animals, just because they are a target of opportunity. Illegal shooting of protected animals has consequences! Potential Loss of hunting license, a fine and court costs of $200.00 and up!
Stay tuned for more good things to come from the Idaho Varmint Hunters.
IVH will be announcing some new important things, as soon as all the particulars are worked out. And we are able to announce them. Stay Tuned!
